REEEP1 and CTCN2 have recently launched Climate Tagger (www.climatetagger.net), a new tool to automatically scan, label, sort and catalogue datasets and document collections. Climate Tagger now incorporates a Drupal Module for automatic annotation of Drupal content nodes. Climate Tagger addresses knowledge-driven organizations in the climate and development arenas, providing automated functionality to streamline, catalogue and link their Climate Compatible Development data and information resources.

Making the overall Open Data ecosystem more useful and accessible isn’t only a technological issue. If we publish only Linked Open Data stuff out there, we aren’t solving the problem at all. We need to think about the overall user experience, and more about our potential users, our data remixers. And, on the other hand, how we can make this concept of remixing data visible on mainstream channels? We need two different things: firstly, be sexier and easier to understand. And secondly, be closer to the people real agenda settings. The starting point is having more context around data: not only speaking about the contextual geographic information system. I’m speaking about merging different worlds, and different data silos, hiding the way you’re doing that.

A major EU investment in open data research will help link up “bubbles” of innovation currently scattered across the continent, according to one open data pioneer in France. The EU has committed €14.4m (£11m) from its Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme to three initiatives designed to catalyse open data innovation across the continent, in what is claimed to be the largest investment of its kind in the world to date. The initiatives build on UK and international work by the Open Data Institute (ODI), a non-profit body co-founded by inventor of the web Sir Tim Berners-Lee. First is a €7.8m, 30-month Open Data Incubator for Europe (ODinE), a start-up support programme based on a similar ODI project which has backed 18 UK companies.

FJACKSON, MI – Students continue to work on civic-minded projects for Jackson residents and officials nearly one year into a partnership between the city and the University of Michigan. A website shedding light on a downtown Jackson construction project and an open data policy opening City Hall information to the general public are two examples of eight projects U-M students continue to update. The partnership – which comes at no cost to the city – began in January. Project updates from the fall semester will be presented to the public at an exposition from 2-4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Jackson City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave.

We Need Us, an artwork composed of a series of living, dynamic ‘scenes’, commissioned by the Open Data Institute (ODI) and The Space, will be projected onto the exterior of Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall for Web We Want Festival this weekend (November 28-30). We Need Us was created by artist and ODI Art Associate Julie Freeman, and launched on October 6th at TED Global, Brazil. We Need Us is powered by people using the web. It is an animated artwork that uses open metadata – data about data – from global users of citizen science platform, Zooniverse. The piece explores the real-time online presence, clicks and selections of this community by manipulating their data, creating rhythms which are translated into abstract sound and visual compositions.

Treasury Board President Tony Clement unveiled the latest version of his Open Government Action Plan earlier this month, continuing a process that has seen some important initiatives to make government data such as statistical information and mapping data publicly available in open formats free from restrictive licenses. There is much like to about Canada’s open government efforts, which have centred on three pillars: open data, open information, and open dialogue. Given the promise of “greater transparency and accountability, increased citizen engagement, and driving innovation and economic opportunity”, few would criticize the aspirational goals of Canada’s open government efforts.

Seattle startup Socrata is surging ahead after landing $30 million in fresh capital, according to a SEC filing. The filing — which lists Jai Das of Sapphire Ventures (formerly SAP Ventures) and Scott Maxwell of OpenView Venture Partners as directors — indicates that the company could raise a total of $35 million. Socrata landed $18 million from OpenView Venture Partners, Morgenthaler Ventures and Frazier Technology Partners last year. At the time of that deal, the company employed just 48 people. But the company, which is developing cloud-based offerings for open government that help drive transparency and greater civic engagement, has undergone a hiring boom in the past few months. The company now employs 140 people at its Pioneer Square offices, and it’s looking for bigger space.

November brought two pieces of good news for Californians hoping to regain momentum in the fight against the public-employee pension systems that are strangling state and local budgets. Well, one and a half pieces of good news, anyway. The one is the result of the mayoral election in San Jose, which pension reformers hope is a bellweather. Voters had a choice between a pro-reform candidate and a union-backed anti-reformer. Fortunately, they chose Sam Liccardo, who supports the agenda of outgoing Mayor Chuck Reed, architect of that city’s successful pension-reform ballot initiative in 2012 and leader of a stalled state initiative drive aimed at empowering government leaders to negotiate reductions in current workers’ future benefits.

It’s been a little while since we’ve had news on what all of the 2014 School of Data fellows are up to as part of their fellowship – so, we wanted to give you some quick updates on what’s been going on in just the last week or so from a few of the fellows: Hannah, in South Africa, is helping Ndifuna Ukwazi create a map of Cape Town’s Budget, and testing out CartoDB. Siyabonga, also in South Africa, organised and hosted a data scraping workshop together with Tabula and import.io last week, and is coding a news app at the moment. Watch this space! Siya is also holding a skillshare on Thursday 27 Nov on User Experience for all things data- join the hangout here. The skillshare will take place at 1pm GMT/8am CST/9am EDT/6pm IST/8pm WIB.
