In recent months there has been a lot of discussion about how the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration should invest in the private sector to provide valuable meteorological data to NOAA through a commercial “data buy.” Radio occultation is one data set that has been mentioned frequently. It has been argued that the private sector can provide NOAA with radio occultation data quicker and less expensively, and at lower risk, than through traditional satellite procurement programs. Radio occultation is a relatively simple and inexpensive way of obtaining vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and water vapor in the troposphere and stratosphere (roughly from the surface to 40 kilometers) and electron density in the ionosphere.

The National Security Agency released an open source software product that automates data flows among multiple computer networks, even when data formats and protocols differ. As the volume and rate of data grows and as the number of systems, protocols, and formats increase, so too does the complexity and need for greater data management insight and agility. Niagarafiles (Nifi) is a dataflow system based on the concepts of flow-based programming and was designed to manage dataflow in massive distributed computing systems operated by numerous teams and organizations. Joseph L. Witt, the lead developer of Nifi, said it “provides a way to prioritize data flows more effectively and get rid of artificial delays in identifying and transmitting critical information.

The result has been an explosion of research using this data, which was only brought to the attention of many users by Facebook’s infamous study on emotional words, in which researchers manipulated the emotions of unsuspecting users. “Powerful computational resources combined with the availability of massive social media data sets has given rise to a growing body of work that [measures] population structure and human behavior at unprecedented scale,” write researchers Juergen Pfeffer and Derek Ruths in a recent Science paper that discusses the shortcomings of social media research methods.

JACKSON, MI – The city of Jackson’s new, $45,000 website is set to go live 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, city officials said. After spending nine months developing the new site, CivicPlus Web Development employees are contracted to maintain and upgrade the site through March 2017 with $45,459 in general fund dollars. City officials opted to spend the funds on a new site in March after councilman Derek Dobies, 6th Ward, pushed for an upgraded site saying the current website, created in 2009, “isn’t user friendly.” “By structuring the website around services instead of city departments, we can help improve that connection,” he said. “I’ve been pushing for (a new website) for years.” Bids for the project ranged from $16,000 to more than $200,000.

Earlier this year Wellington pored over New York City’s parking ticket data and identified two hydrants on consecutive blocks that were generating $55,000 a year in tickets, all from cars that appeared to be parking legally.Not long after Wellington’s online report went viral, the data-loving citizen investigator learned that the city’s Department of Transportation had reviewed the roadway markings, then repainted the parking spots so that drivers would stop getting ticketed. (The DOT didn’t respond to a request for comment.
