The Financial Data and Technology Association (FDATA), which launched on Tuesday, said it wants to help consumers “make better decisions and take control of their finances”. Money Dashboard, Moneyhub, QuickBooks, Runpath Digital, Safety Net Credit and Yodlee are the first six members of the FDATA. “We have very simple twin aims: to bring the benefits of financial technology to the UK consumer, and to put in place a strict code of industry practice to ensure complete data security,” director of the FDATA, Andy Maciver, said. “Our industry must be underpinned by a reputation for data security, so we have as much incentive as the banks and financial institutions to put a bullet-proof system in place.

The locavore movement has been in vogue long enough that it has an app and a listicle on PBS. Locavore was even the word of the year way back in 2007. But what does it mean to eat local when you live in a city? How many people can truly be fed locally in a densely populated urban environment? Last week, FiveThirtyEight and ESPN Films published the first in a series of short documentaries called The Collectors, profiles of people who use data in innovative ways. “Cartographers of the Edible World” introduced Evan Welty and Caleb Phillips, who built an open-source, user-generated website that catalogs the location of edible plants all over the world. When the two men met, Phillips was interested in technology for social organizing. Welty was using publicly available data to map arable land.

Tom Schenk quietly moved into the role of chief data officer for the City of Chicago in September, more than a year after Brett Goldstein vacated that role, city officials said Monday. Schenk previously served as the city’s director of analytics and oversaw its open data portal. It is now officially his job to carry out the objectives detailed in the city’s Open Data Report. Schenk said the city made strides in 2014 in releasing red-light camera data, launching an Open Data Portal Status blog and using text mining to identify popular Freedom of Information Act requests. The city didn’t meet some planned initiatives, such as the introduction of a form to make requesting publication of data sets easier. This year’s Open Data Report promised the publication of 21 data sets in 2014.

A U.S. Forest Service request for proposals that would require the release of data gathered by the Recreation.gov website is being revised to satisfy criticisms from open-data advocates. But data entrepreneurs are still protesting that potential restrictions in the RFP are downright anti-free market. Recreation.gov is the booking portal for reservations at 90,000 sites on federal lands, including national parks and forests, wildlife refuges, waterways, and recreation areas. For almost 10 years, the contractor that manages the site — Active Outdoors, a division of the Dallas-based Active Network — has kept a tight hold on all the reservation data collected by its ReserveAmerica system while operating what amounts to a monopoly on federal recreation site booking.

Appallicious founder Yo Yoshida discusses a personal tragedy that lead him to become a prolific champion of citywide open data in San Francisco tied to apartments and housing. His comments were from March’s inaugural Data Summit in 2014. Regional forums for the 2015 Data Summit, scheduled to happen again in March during the nationwide transparency awareness week known as “Sunshine Week” are just underway. Zillow, the fast-growing online real estate marketplace, couldn’t exist without public data. More specifically, it probably couldn’t exist without online public data relating to real estate sales information. The nation has more than 3,000 counties, each with its own registry of deeds where routine but vital data are recorded on every transaction involving the sale of homes, businesses and land. Until recently, much of that information resided in paper documents stored in filing cabinets. But as that information has moved online, its value has increased, making it possible for firms like Zillow to use the data in new ways, creating its popular “zestimate” forecast on home values. Zillow is a prime example of how open data creates economic value.

The World Bank Group’s International Debt Statistics (IDS) 2015 was released today. The Bank’s flagship debt data publication features 2013 data on external debt stocks and flows, as well as other major financial indicators on the 124 developing countries that report to the The major news from this year’s IDS is that net external debt flows to developing countries rose 28% in 2013, driven by a sharp 50% increase in short-term debt inflows. Additionally, foreign direct investment in emerging economies proved to be steady and resilient, bringing net capital flows (debt and equity) to $1.2 trillion. The White House launched a new open data portal on Dec. 15, targeting the needs of first responders and emergency survivors. The website, found at disasters.data.gov, features disaster-related data sets, tools and resources for those who want to join a larger community of data-minded first responders. The website features data (more than 100 sets) that can be sorted by type of disaster — earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, severe winter weather, tornadoes and wildfires — as well as tools and apps, and information about how to get involved or join challenges like the current Innovator Challenge, which calls for ideas on how to reduce flooding fatalities.
