The Richard King Mellon Foundation will provide $1.8 million for an online database where residents can find government information such as Pittsburgh crime statistics and Allegheny County property records, officials announced Wednesday. Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are working with the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University to build the regional data resource center that’s expected to begin providing city information as early as January or February. Officials hope the site will eventually include information and statistics from municipalities, nonprofits, civic organizations and universities from across the region.

Since the publication of Dr Ben Goldacre’s Bad Pharma book in 2012, the issue of clinical trial transparency has gone from being a piece of esoterica discussed in the halls of academia to a major public campaign. Shortly after Bad Pharma was published – a book in which Dr Goldacre lambasted pharma and regulators over their lack of transparency – AllTrials was established by The BMJ, Sense About Science, Dr Goldacre and others, which began lobbying for all clinical trials to be registered and published. This period marked a real turn in the transparency debate.

The concept of civic-minded hacking continues to gain legitimacy, evidenced in part by White House support for the National Day of Civic Hacking, which swelled to more than 100 participating cities in the U.S., Canada and abroad during the weekend of May 31. Google hosted its first government hackathon in May as well, in conjunction with state agencies from Wyoming and Colorado. And coders and other technologists have more government data as raw material for app-building due to big spikes in available data sets and open data policies sweeping public-sector agencies. An executive order signed by Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy in February laid out responsibilities for the state’s new open data portal, the same month that Palo Alto, Calif., switched to an “open data by default” posture.

A new acquistion by the government traffic driver GovDelivery hopes to marry open data with its suite of communication services. On Dec. 17, the St. Paul, Minn., company GovDelivery announced it acquired the open data platform provider NüCivic — a deal strategized to complement its notification and engagement platform that relies heavily on email, text messaging and social media for its more than 1,000 government clients and network of more than 70,000 million users worldwide. While financial details were not disclosed, GovDelivery’s CEO and Co-founder Scott Burns said interest stemmed from open data’s rising pull in government and NüCivic’s development expertise in Drupal, an open source website content management system embraced by many city and state departments.

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation has announced £10m in funding over five years to support research by the Alan Turing Institute on the engineering applications of big data. The charity published a “foresight” report on how “big data” might have an effect on the safety and performance of engineering and infrastructure in energy, transport, and shipping. Mark Walport, the government’s chief scientific adviser, said: “The Lloyd’s Register Foundation has today shone a spotlight on how big data is increasingly central to the design and management of the engineered world. Their £10m grant offer to the Alan Turing Institute will build knowledge and skills that will not only make that engineered world a safer one, but will also support growth and public service provision.

Big data analytics helps uncover greater insights from existing information, and has come to be recognised as a useful tool for advancing business opportunities further. Government agencies such as the Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDeC) are seeking to promote greater adoption of this technology locally, but are still finding that many companies are reluctant to pick up on this trend.  “Although the awareness of big data analytics (BDA) amongst Malaysian companies is already high, their readiness or willingness to actually adopt it is still relatively low,” Datuk Yasmin Mahmood, chief executive officer at MDeC pointed out during a recent interview with the media.

The Office of Science and Technology Policy has launched a new website that works as a public resource for disaster data and collaboration tools as part of the government’s Innovation for Disasters initiative. Brian Forde, Heather King and Meredith Lee wrote on the White House blog that Disasters.data.gov supports efforts to drive open data, disaster preparedness and community empowerment. Disasters.data.gov features landing pages that include data sets on types of disasters; crowdsourcing, communications and alert applications and tools; and challenges to encourage participation from data stewards and other stakeholders.
