I have no way to verify or deny that, but I can tell you this: The entire product is built around open data. In fact, its founders adamantly refused to let me call it a technology company, which is just one of many reasons I’m not revealing its name. “Our product is the data,” one VP repeatedly told me. That’s a bit of a bold claim for a company based on government-released data and other open data sets. If it were really the data, and everybody has access to the data, then what’s the point? It all started in Britain. During the early 1990s, the Irish Republican Army was raising the stakes in its program to gain independence for Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom. Part of that program was a series of truck bombs, now called IEDs, within England, in an attempt to disrupt commerce and, hopefully, get the European Union to move its financial center from London to Frankfurt. This would do great damage to the economy of the UK. On Saturday, April 24, 1993, a bomb was detonated in Bishopsgate, in the center of the City of London. By doing it on a Saturday, the IRA limited the loss of life, since that part of London was empty (in fact, the only fatality was one of the bombers).

Every city dweller has been there: downtown, late for an appointment — and will be even later because there’s no place to park!  The city of Chicago hopes to make such a thing easier with its new detailed parking map and accompanying mobile app released Dec. 18. Using open data, the interactive map details the location of all 1,429 of the city’s residential parking zones and their associated restrictions, so drivers can find a parking space that suits their needs. The map replaces a “zone table,” which is a 90-page book that details parking restrictions in the city’s residential areas. City Clerk’s Office Spokesman Patrick Corcoran also noted that the map could be used to help people in other planning decisions, like choosing a residence.

The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act is in full swing, with the Office of Management and Budget and the Treasury Department catching headlines in their path to issue a governmentwide set of financial data standards by May 2015. But quietly in the background, the Department of Health and Human Services is gearing up to lead a two-year pilot of the DATA Act to test how data standardization in a complex federal ecosystem works. Section 5 of the DATA Act — a mandate for financial data transparency in conjunction with USAspending.gov — requires OMB to launch a pilot, and the office chose HHS to test the waters of the act’s massive and complex data standardization efforts.
