SmartDrive Systems announced record growth in 2014. Growth in its fiscal third quarter, which it just concluded, exceeded 130 percent year over year. Headquartered in San Diego, the company offers a video-based risk management program for commercial vehicles and transit agencies that is designed to reduce collisions and improve fuel efficiency. In Nov., 2014, CCJ was granted an exclusive visit to SmartDrive’s headquarters. You can read about that here. 2014 was the most exciting year in digital health since 2000, when the human genome was cloned. In February 2001, The Human Genome Project and Craig Venter’s Celera Genomics published the hallmark event. MIPIM announced on Tuesday (January 13th) the winners of the MIPIM Open Stage, which is a crowdsourcing operation calling on companies to suggest a conference panel subject related to the impact of big and open data on the property industry. The winners are CompStak and Fundrise, who source information and investment from the crowd, similarly to Wikipedia and Kickstarter. US leaders in their field, the two companies jointly proposed a conference on “The power of the crowd – a game changer in commercial real estate.” Fundrise is a real estate crowdfunding and investment platform, while CompStak provides US property professionals with a database compiled from information collected from thousands of brokers. Their conference will take place on Thursday, March 12th.

At his first State of the City tonight, Mayor Walsh will unveil a new initiative aimed at driving civic engagement and government transparency. Showcased on the screens erected at Boston Symphony Hall will be a new public version of the Mayor’s Dashboard – an aggregation of municipal metrics and city data he uses to keep a finger on Boston’s digital pulse. The public version will display information based on four different categories: human & basic services, city services, public safety and homicides. This gives Bostonians a keyhole into the kinds of issues City Hall is keeping an eye on – from the number of guns picked off the streets and missed trash pickups to reported graffiti.

The city of Jackson, Michigan, has bold ambitions to make its website the first of its kind in the Great Lakes State to operate as an open data portal. Unfortunately, city officials announced they’ve hit a slight delay in the process, pushing the expected rollout back at least a month. “We’re kind of struggling to keep our heads above water after the holidays,” Jackson City Manager Patrick Burtch said in an interview with MLive.com. “We were going to meet with city employees this week to train them on policies and procedures but pushed it back to next.” Even with the delay, Jackson, a city with about 33,000 residents located 35 miles west of Ann Arbor, is embarking on a historic path.

This is for a shifting Information Technology project called “Odyssey”. It’s a strange choice for a number of reasons, not least of which is that the Council is very pro-local business (of which we have some IT rock stars), very pro local IT (Wired Wellington and other events), is sinking a lot of money into IT incubators in the city, and is planning to spend more money on an IT precinct of which the star will be a central workplace for startup IT companies.

A new world record has been set and we’ve finally surpassed 500k page views in a month! We ended 2014 with a bang and December garnered 547,016 page views and 308,112 unique visits. We published 77 articles and had numerous posts highlighting our “best of” content from 2014. It was amazing to see 60% of the articles published were contributed from the open source community at-large. Several articles were referenced by other publications. The open gaming review Open source and Linux in 2014 was picked up by IT World, and an article on open data Does Open Data Demand an API-first Approach? was covered on Programmable Web.
