Two important new developments may mean that many more researchers will soon be able to access and analyze data from many more clinical trials. In recent years, in response to troubling and far-reaching questions about the availability and reliability of clinical trial data, reformers have called for new policies that would require drug companies and other clinical trial sponsors to provide outside researchers access to the data. The two announcements today appear to bring the open data movement closer to the tipping point. In the first development, a preliminary report from the prestigious Institute of Medicine lends strong support to the open data movement.

A panel at the 2014 North American Spine Society Annual Meeting titled “BMP Use in Spine Surgery: The Post-YODA Era” discussed just that. Medtronic’s rhBMP-2 product, Infuse, exploded from 2002, when it received FDA clearance and studies were released showing its efficacy, to 2009 when data showing increased cancer risk was higher than originally reported. The Yale University Open Data Access project examined whether there were issues with the original clinical trials reported. BMP use reached its zenith at 28 .1 percent of all fusions and then dropped significantly after the new data was published, hitting 7.8 percent of procedures. Over the past six months, the number of procedures using BMP increased slightly again.

Crowd-curated video news service Newstag has secured US$1.3 million in its first seed funding round from two private investors and a Swedish bank. The startup, based in Sweden, the birthplace of Spotify and Skype, also received an innovation grant of US$150,000 from the Swedish government. According to Newstag Co-founder, R&D Director and Southeast Asia Market Manager, Victor Alexiev, the funding will be channeled into product development and expanding into Southeast Asia by approaching it through Singapore. Alexiev shared with e27 Newstag’s twofold plan for the region — develop stakeholders and user base, and locate some of its data analytics and consumer insight generation activities to Singapore.

Any discussion on open data is almost always followed by debates on privacy concerns. Ensuring awareness of privacy risks is vital to promoting the benefits of public sector data sharing, says information commissioner Information commissioner Christopher Graham has argued that Freedom of Information (foI) access must remain a vital part of the government’s transparency initiatives alongside its commitments to open data and proactive publication. Along with questioning the current pace of European data protection reforms, Graham, who leads UK data regulator the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), this week raised concern over recent comments by Cabinet Office minister Frances Maude about potentially moving away from the practice of handling FoI requests. “My aim if I’m honest with you is to make Freedom of Information redundant,” he cited Maude as saying last month.
