On Wednesday, the Institute of Medicine released a report detailing four recommendations designed to increase sharing of clinical trial data, Modern Healthcare reports. The IOM report was funded by: The first IOM recommendation calls for clinical trial data sharing to be the norm and expectation in part by requiring plans for data sharing as part of clinical trial protocols (Rice, Modern Healthcare, 1/14). The second recommendation calls for the full, analyzable data set from a clinical trial to be published: IOM’s third and fourth recommendations call for: Some stakeholders expressed support for the recommendations, while also cautioning that companies might not follow them because IOM does not have enforcement power (New York Times, 1/14).

The federal government kicked off its promotion of an open data hackathon in Toronto on Wednesday night, encouraging people to use publicly available data provided by government departments to build new apps. Now in its second year, the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) hackathon is targeted towards students, entrepreneurs, programmers, developers, and graphic designers. Participants will have two days to come up with a creative mobile app using open data sets provided by the federal government, with an eye to helping youth, commerce, or to improving quality of life. The contest kicks off Feb. 20 and runs until Feb. 22, coinciding with International Open Data Day on Feb. 21.

Yelp users will soon be able to look up restaurant inspection scores for their favorite eateries now that the user-generated review site has struck a partnership with an open data company in a project aimed at improving public health. Under the new partnership, Yelp will work with Socrata to distribute restaurant inspection information on their site, a move that’s meant to add a layer of transparence to the dining landscape, give diners peace of mind, and improve overall public health in communities around the world. Socrata is a cloud software company that works with public sector organizations to provide data-driven solutions. A new European-based project seeks to facilitate open access to research infrastructures across borders. On January 15, the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) announced that the EGI-Engage project (full name: Engaging the Research Community towards an Open Science Commons) underwent a successful review by the European Commission with a score of 15/15, giving the project the green light to begin in March 2015 with the public launch to take place at the EGI Conference 2015 in Lisbon, May 18-22, 2015.

A new search site will allow households and businesses across the country to check for flood risks to property. Using data from the Environment Agency, CheckMyFloodRisk.co.uk allows people to search for an address and see its proximity to flood risks. The site, created by data visualisation specialist Shoothill, is expected to be popular with people who think their home is at risk and those looking to buy property. Rod Plummer, managing director of Shoothill, said: “This hugely valuable dataset became freely available only very recently as part of the Environment Agency’s continued commitment to the UK’s open data initiative.

The Canadian government will hold its second annual hackathon challenge next month, with $40,000 in prize money available for the Canadian programmers who develop the most innovative applications for publicly available government data. The Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) event is a two-day hackathon that challenges programmers to use open data to produce something new and helpful to the public. Sponsored by the federal government and run by software developer XMG Studios, CODE 2015 is a 48-hour theme-based challenge that will launch across the country on Feb. 20. The hackathon is predicated on Canada’s open data practices, which involve all levels of government making their accumulated statistical data available to the public in raw form.
