The Open Data Center Alliance, Inc (ODCA) members represent companies who are committed to accelerating the deployment of cloud solutions and services. This includes interest in both the provisioning and consumption of public, internal and hybrid cloud solutions for enterprise services. In an annual survey, the ODCA asks its members what they are currently implementing and what they plan for the future. The survey, conducted at the end of 2014, revealed a current preference among members for internal cloud solutions.

The main goal is to promote open data in the research community and raise awareness about sharing research data and using existing research data. The course is designed for doctoral students from the field of social sciences and humanities. Training consists of lectures and hands-on sessions focused on good Research Data Management practices and issues related to data sharing within the current EU frameworks, which foster open science. Depositing and Using Data Teaching is delivered through a combination of presentations, exercises, discussions, and group work. Throughout the training, doctoral students will have the opportunity to work on a data management plan for their own research projects.

During the event experts will consider the most common mistakes in the publication of datasets on the open data portal of the Russian Federation and ways to address them. Experts will also discuss guidelines for the publication of data sets. Results of the fourth annual membership survey of the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA) were disclosed Monday which examined cloud computing adoption among member companies and revealed a current preference for internal cloud solutions. Conducted at the end of last year, the survey discovered a growing interest in software-defined networking and hybrid cloud, suggesting that companies will look to solutions that blend public and internal resources over the next few years. The objectives of the survey are to track adoption of cloud services, track integration of ODCA requirements into deployment plans, and identify shared outlooks on technical obstacles facing enterprise use of cloud services and data analytics. It reveals what these companies are doing with the cloud.

A new data platform called “SkillsPlanner” that would link up FE colleges, construction employers and local authorities wanting to mandate training linked to construction contracts and local “skills brokerage” services could be on its way. A consortium put together by an organisation called Ethos, a collective of “social entrepreneurs”, last month put in a £1m bid for government funding via an Innovate UK programme. The team’s bid for the “Solving urban challenges with data” funding call had already reached the shortlist, and a funding decision is due at the end of April. Ethos has brought together CITB, the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, around 10 “major construction employers”, six Further Education colleges, and five local authorities.

To improve healthcare delivery via data, public health officials in California are collaborating on an open data movement. A data portal is up and running on the website for the California Department of Health and is open to the public–including healthcare policymakers, innovators, coders and more. The state is hoping the information can be used to find gaps and issues that need to be fixed in California’s health systems, according to the Sacramento Bee. “We’ve started working on the question of ‘how do you get more data in the hands of the people,'” Daniel Stein, co-founder of Stewards of Change, told the paper. “California has mountains of information not easily consumable or easily combined for analysis.

When reviewing the 5 steps for transforming your business using data, we highlighted that real-time business intelligence is the first step toward the digitalization of business. How far-reaching (and useful) the insight produced by business intelligence depends to a great degree on how much input data it was given to start with. In the early days of business intelligence, data was stored in expensive enterprise data warehouses and data marts. Expensive because disk storage was pricey, but even more so because licenses of data warehouse databases were proportional to the amount of data stored. Hence the cost-efficiency compromise always had to be analyzed when considering new data as candidates for the data warehouse. Storage has decreased dramatically in price.
