The BYTE project aims to assist European science and industry in capturing the positive externalities and diminishing the negative externalities associated with big data in order to gain a greater share of the big data market by 2020. JERSEY CITY — Brian Platt has been named director of Jersey City’s new Innovation Team, a program funded through a three-year, $2.25 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop announced yesterday in a statement. Jersey City was one of twelve cities in the United States selected in December 2014 to take part in the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ program. The Innovation Team, nicknamed the “i-team,” will initially focus on the revitalization of main street business districts in Jersey City. Platt worked as an data analyst with a global management consulting firm, McKinsey & Company, according to the release. He previously taught kindergarten in Newark through the Teach for America Program as well.

Nearly a month has passed since the Dakota County commissioners fired the county’s longtime community development director. The public still doesn’t know why. No one wants to comment on why Mark Ulfers lost his job after 29 years as head of the Dakota County Community Development Agency. Not the agency staff, not the commissioners, not Ulfers. Given 60 days notice, Ulfers remains on the payroll, collecting his $13,437 monthly salary. It’s not clear what that’s paying for, because the county has already chosen an acting executive director. In these situations, public records should be the people’s recourse. But Dakota County has refused to turn over records explaining why Ulfers was terminated.

As police estimate this week that over 5,000 people have been affected by phone hacking, so software developers have called for a cultural shift in how we use communications.They wish to promote far greater open data sources, believing that corporate scandals would be less easy to commit or keep hidden. “It is those leaders who have taken us into a 21st century overflowing with one corporate scandal after another,” says John Yardley, the Managing Director for JPY. “If business culture shifted further towards company digital communications being open and shared, then the likelihood of hiding or even committing such scandals as the tax evasion and phone hacking revelations would be much, much less.

Notices of parades and protests for Northern Ireland can now be made online, after the Public Processions (Electronic Communication of Notices) (Northern Ireland) Order 2015 came into effect on 12 March. It will mean that organisers can submit notice of parades and protests in Northern Ireland through an online portal, available on the Parades Commission website, avoiding the need to travel to the relevant police station. The Department for Education is to set up an online database of post-16 courses to support young people in making choices about further education and training. It has published an operational guide that sets out the information that education and training provides must supply. It said the information should be kept up to date and available as open data.

Prizes awarded for innovative use of Government of Canada open data at the Canadian Open Data Experience TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – March 27, 2015) – Treasury Board President Tony Clement congratulated winners of the second annual Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) at the Grand Finale event in Toronto last night.
