After 48 hours spent mining government data, designing an app, and writing computer code, this year’s Canadian Open Data Experience winners came up with a way to help youth choose a career path. The app, called Career Path, lets users search 40,000 job titles and access visualizations of job prospects in those careers. The job projections are based on data available to all Canadians through Employment and Social Development Canada. The team that developed the app calls it a “two-click career and job search.” “We tried to make it very simple, very intuitive, for young people and students, for example in high school, to search for different professions,” one of the four team members, Daniil Shevelev, told CTV’s Canada AM on Friday.

Last week, an announcement was made by AstraZeneca Plc ADR (NYSE:AZN) in which the company unveiled its policy of joining the data disclosure campaign. AstraZeneca Plc ADR (NYSE:AZN) stated that it will be undertaking a policy, under which companies  are required to unveil the data accumulated during clinical trials as per the request of researchers. Lately pharmaceutical companies have been coming across this issue of data disclosure and as a corollary have been quite pressurized by it. The basis of this issue were several cases which asserted how public is kept ignored regarding the efficacy profiles of drugs. Academics and consumer groups have come forward with this concern about data from clinical trials being kept out of the public’s reach by drug makers.

Like a digital wildfire spreading across the globe, more companies and organizations continue to hire or promote executives into newly created chief data officer (CDO) positions. But that doesn’t mean it’s quick work to grab the CDO title. A case in point: The United Kingdom named Mike Bracken as its CDO this week. But take a look at Bracken’s background — deep with digital technology and data expertise — and it’s clear he’s been a CDO-in-waiting for quite some time. Bracken joined the UK’s Cabinet Office in 2011 as executive director of digital. He focused on creating a Government Digital Service that now includes DirectGov, BusinessLink, Innovations, Digital Policy, Digital Engagement and more. Earlier, he was director at a UK technology services company.

And open data, is, therefore, only a means to this end. In a highly engaging agenda-setting workshop on rebooting open data in Africa, on the fringe of the on-going AUC-ECA Conference of Ministers in Addis Ababa, policy makers, activists and development professionals from across the continent said this perspective should underpin the brewing revolution on freely generating and using data for Africa’s transformation.

The latest membership survey from the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA) shows increased use of software-defined networking (SDN) technologies with even more demand forecast for the near future. The ODCA coordinates open cloud computing development standards, providing usage models that include global requirements for datacenter and cloud solutions with detailed documentation about deploying technology based on those requirements. The usage model requirements can help organizations develop requests for proposals (RFPs) and specifications for new cloud implementations.

When a YQL statement calls an Open Table Definition that contains the execute sub-element, YQL no longer performs the request to the templated URI in the endpoint. Instead YQL provides a runtime environment in which the JavaScript is executed server-side. Your JavaScript in turn must then return data as the output to the original YQL statement. Within the execute sub-element, you can embed JavaScript and E4X (the shortened term for ECMAScript for XML), which adds native XML support to JavaScript. Support for E4X was first introduced in JavaScript 1.6. The ability to execute JavaScript is implemented through the execute sub-element within an Open Data Table definition.

A workshop in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa today saw the first meeting of a group of organisations and civil society activists come together in the beginnings of a movement to help promote for open data across the continent. The initiative is being headed by the World Wide Web Foundation, which was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 2009, and involves the World Bank as well as local an international NGOs. ActionAid, Africa Freedom of Information Centre and our own Code4SA are all involved, alonf with the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Social Justice Coalition.

The Social Security Administration is looking toward a new approach to storage in the next year as it prepares to launch the Electronic Vault system, a key piece of the agency’s new National Support Center. The NSC is a 300,000 square foot, $489 million facility designed to leverage new technologies, including server virtualization and thin provisioning to lower costs and closely scale resources. SAA said it will migrate its mainframe backup and recovery operations from magnetic tape media to disk-based virtual tape for the vault system, which will come online by the end of 2016 to support the NSC.
