The mayor said the cost “will be relatively modest.” Amsterdam residents have spent 10 per cent less time in traffic thanks to data, Tory said. Tory hopes to replace clipboards and sensors with virtual traffic managers and free traffic flow apps. City officials are harnessing traffic data to get Toronto moving smarter like a “truly smart city.” At a news conference on Tuesday morning at the Ryerson University Digital Media Zone, Mayor John Tory pledged to bring Toronto into the 21st century by creating a Big Data Innovation Team. “Pretty well everybody has a smartphone that sends out a signal each and every place,” Tory said.

In this round, we are excited to announce that the apps4nsw program will be divided into two parts: the apps4nsw challenges, and Hackathon event challenges held at this year’s CeBIT.  CeBIT runs the world’s largest computer expo and their Sydney conference is expected to draw over 500 exhibitors and 34,000 business visitors from across industry, from start-ups to multinationals. The apps4nsw challenges for this round are from Office of Finance and Services (NSW Procurement) and the NSW State Library.  The top three entries in each of the apps4nsw challenges will be awarded a $500 prize on Thursday, 7 May 2015.  On Friday 22 May 2015, the two entries selected as winners in each category will be awarded $15,000 according to the Terms and Conditions.

More users are tapping into the FDA’s application programming interfaces (API), known as OpenFDA, to use public FDA information—like adverse events and enforcement actions. The API is meant to help developers create applications that can mine and harness public drug and device information in new ways. The agency announced Thursday on Twitter that OpenFDA now has 6,000 API-registered users worldwide. Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, FDA’s chief health informatics officer, told government IT website FedScoop that dozens of apps have already been created using the API. OpenFDA launched in beta in June. The platform aims to improve public access to information about adverse events (AE), enforcement actions and labeling for drugs and devices.

As initiatives go, Open Data is still in its infancy, with most early-adopters only two or three years out from the release of their first data sets. As the CEO of APPCityLife, a civic tech company supporting the delivery of those data sets into useful civic mobile apps and tools, I’ve had the privilege of being a part of the Open Data movement from those early days and have learned a bit about what has worked well for some of our early clients. Here are three reasons I believe that every city with an open data initiative should be producing and supporting official mobile apps from some of their own open data feeds. As an early adopter, a major concern of the city’s administration was ensuring the open data produced would be consumable and useful to the public.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 7, 2015)– Public Safety Director Troy Riggs and his associates will participate in White House talks Wednesday regarding Indianapolis’ progress in opening up its police complaint process and making crime data available to the public. Even though the city’s new partner in police communications has never handled a system as large or complex as Marion County’s. Riggs said Washington officials are interested in Indianapolis’ advancements in two areas. “One, the open data that we have provided to the public, and we have asked for assistance with the systemic issues that lead to crime, and the other thing that they’ve noticed is the complete revamping of the complaint process on police officers.

You might feel pretty cozy taking bong rips in your apartment on the gentrified part of town, but let’s be real: a few blocks away, people are getting charges tacked onto their rap sheets for doing the same thing. According to the latest data available from the FBI, there were about 1.5 million drug busts in the U.S. during 2013, accounting for the biggest bulk of all types of arrests made nationwide (about 11.3 million) for that year. But how is the war on drugs actually playing out in your neighborhood? The national data doesn’t show it. Only locally gathered data, compiled by organizations like the U.S. City Open Data Census, can help us see how things are actually panning out on a block to block level.

Monitor trategy experts predict that the number of new smart city greenfield developments in the GCC will double within the next three years. This follows the launch of six entirely new, master-planned smart city developments in the GCC over the past decade. According to the report of Monitor Deloitte, the region’s smart city growth will largely be driven by developments in the government planning, administration, and operations area, backed by significant GCC government investments in e-government and mobile services.

The bureau needs to be more than just another data collector. The suggestion that Australia’s national census change from a five to a 10-year cycle has sparked considerable discussion and reporting about the census’s future. It’s important to consider the ongoing nature and format of this major information-gathering exercise, but the debate should be much wider. The real question we face centres on the future of the Australian Bureau of Statistics itself. The last census cost taxpayers $440 million and involved 29,000 collectors, who delivered 14.2 million forms to more than 9.8 million households. The result was a detailed and valuable snapshot of Australia and its population. The next census is due to be undertaken in 2016.
