Progressive Conservative Party Leader Rob Lantz unveiled an “Open Island” commitment on Monday morning that promised to overhaul how people interact with the government. “Having an open government is more accountable, efficient and effective than what Islanders presently have,” Lantz said in a statement. “Using technology better we can make Prince Edward Island an open island for information. A new direction that engages Islanders, inspires innovation, and drives jobs and growth.” The Open Island commitment, which was unveiled at Holland College’s Centre of Applied Sciences and Technology, focuses on the principles of open government, open information, and open data.

Islanders will have more access to public information if the PC Party wins the next election, says party leader Rob Lantz. In speaking to the media during a policy announcement, Lantz said a PC government would create a new online portal to give Islanders access to public data. “I think this is a new era for open government in Prince Edward Island for accessibility to information and a real platform for innovation and growth,” he said. Lantz made the announcement Monday morning in Charlottetown where he was flanked by eight candidates on hand to hear the promise of open government, open information and open data. The measures announced included adopting an open government declaration and holding open government roundtables.

The Interior Department’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue has launched an open data website tracking revenue the government makes from the coal, natural gas and oil that is extracted from public lands. Working with 18F, GSA’s digital services group, ONRR’s USEITI website is part of the U.S. implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), global coalition working to improve openness and accountable management of revenues from natural resources. The new USEITI portal compiles information on how revenue is generated from resources on federal lands and where that money goes. It uses information from several agencies and provides interactive visualizations as well as access to the underlying datasets .

The number of medical device recalls appears to have plunged during the first quarter of 2015, a review of the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) data by Regulatory Focus has revealed. FDA has since last year been publishing data about its drug and device recall reports through its new open data platform, openFDA. The data make it much easier to assess trends in enforcement measures, including the number of recalls classified by FDA. A review of FDA’s device recall classification data by Focus has found that with respect to device recall classifications, FDA has gone from record highs to near-record lows in just a single quarter.

In his first few months since starting as executive director of the Health Data Consortium, Chris Boone has taken the group known mainly for staging the Health Datapalooza happenings into the realm of serious Capitol Hill lobbying. But Boone, 35 — a former health IT consultant and executive with a specialty in informatics and a former member of the federal Health IT Policy Committee — doesn’t want to call it lobbying, even though the consortium hired a registered lobbyist in 2014, Lauren Ellis. “We want to educate folks,” Boone, who joined the consortium in October, told SearchHealthIT. “We represent the intersection of health data and policy, the policy that drives innovation.” Health Datapalooza, set this year for May 31-June 3 in Washington, D.C.

The state-of-the-art data center would cater to the ICT requirements of firms in the CBD Philippine Long Distance Telephone Corporation (PLDT) has set aside P1 billion ($22.5 million) to put up a state-of-the-art data center in Makati City and further expand its data center network. VITRO Makati would have a capacity of 3,600 full server racks once completed by wholly-owned subsidiary ePLDT in the fourth quarter of the year, said Eric Alberto, PLDT executive vice president PLDT Enterprise & International and Carrier Business Group. The network of VITRO Data Centers currently operates 3 other facilities located in Subic, Cebu, and Pasig, which is currently the largest in the country with a capacity of 2000 racks.

OS Open Map Local is the most detailed street-level map available, combining rural and urban features and buildings as well as other data including property prices, population and crime statistics. Open Names is a search tool collating more than 2.5 million locations that can be used to power the search feature on websites or apps. On the more geographical side, Open Rivers maps out waterways and flood risk areas, while Open Roads is a road network that pinpoints accident hotspots.
