Early this week, a wealth of key announcements and insightful talks were delivered during the Smart Nation Innovations event, organised by Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), the technology arm of the Singapore Government. Smart Nation Innovations encompasses Founders Forum Smart Nation (FFSN) (April 20-21) — a joint collaboration between London-based Founders Forum and IDA, and Smart Nation Innovation (SNI) Conference held on April 22, and the upcoming Tech Saturday on April 25. FFSN and SNI featured international and local speakers sharing their perspectives on how technologies such as IoT and data analytics can make us work and live smarter and healthier.

“The CIO needs to ensure that they champion a value-based and consumption-focused approach to their enterprise data strategy,” say Dr David Salmon and Dr Tadhg Nagle from UCC. Dr Sammon and Dr Nagle are programme directors of the MSc Data Business, Irish Management Institute course at University College Cork (UCC). Dr Sammon is a lecturer in the Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems at UCC. His current research interests focus on the areas of conceptual data modelling, data/information management, theory and theory-building, and redesigning organisational routines through mindfulness. David has published extensively in international journals and conferences.

Hadoop disty MapR has kicked the Open Data Platform into touch, saying it only benefits competitor Hortonworks and provides a way for Pivotal to get out of a hole. The ODP was set up in February, with the aim of Linux-ising Hadoop with a tested reference core for the software. Cloudera, one of the three leading Hadoop distributors, refused to join, with its Chief Strategy Officer Mike Olson blogging: “Pivotal and Hortonworks claim that the ODP is driven by an industry-wide longing for standardisation in the Apache Hadoop ecosystem. I don’t believe them.” “Cloudera’s partner ecosystem includes 1,447 companies at the time of this writing. We’re simply not hearing from them that they’re confused about building applications on core Hadoop,” he added.

Over the past two years, France has been a leading country when it comes to open data and open government — and it is paying off. Only one year after joining the Open Government Partnership, France has just been elected to head the Partnership starting in October 2016. I’ve been regularly covering France’s effort in this area as I think it’s an interesting take on open government. There are many other interesting projects coming out of Etalab. The team first relaunched Data.gouv.fr, France’s open data portal. This project showcases how data can be useful to modernize the French Government and State. It was also a great story as Etalab acts as a small startup within the government, tirelessly iterating on its projects.

Thanks to a new open data deal with the City of Los Angeles, navigation app Waze will now push updates about everything from construction and road closures to hit-and-run incidents and kidnappings. According to the Los Angeles Times report about the announcement: With about 1.3 million Waze users in L.A., the sharing partnership could serve to better connect city-dwellers to transparent government. In a recent Pew survey on open data, only 7 percent of those polled said “local governments share data very effectively.” (Noting the ongoing effort of cities to adapt to the digital age, Bloomberg Philanthropies this week said it would give $42 million to help mid-size cities with big data.

When the Open Data Platform launched in February, it effectively split the Hadoop community down the middle, with Hortonworks, Pivotal, and IBM throwing in with the ODP, and MapR and Cloudera keeping their chips on the Apache Software Foundation. The future of Hadoop is still very much an open question, and how the ODP-ASF split plays out could be a big factor in Hadoop’s future. Everybody seems to agree that the Apache Software Foundation has done an admirable job of getting Apache Hadoop to this point. The open source model—which relies on a community of developers to determine how a product should be developed–is one of Hadoop’s biggest strengths.

Chris Taggart, Founder of OpenCorporates believes that their API will be the principal way that their data is consumed by end users within the next five years. Speaking at API Strategy and Practice / APIDays in Berlin today — and only three days after the release of Version 4 of the OpenCorporates API — Taggart shared some of the origin and unique challenges facing the open data business that aims to build the world’s most comprehensive underlying dataset of company information. “Government information on companies is siloed in various registers,” says Taggart.
