An app to help people explore the culture of Leeds is launching in the city – the first location for an EU pilot project emanating from Italy. The project, promoted by the Italian company Altrama in cooperation with the Enterprise Europe Network, aims to investigate the technical, market and business model opportunities of open data in the city. Europe’s ViaggiArt web platform and mobile app for cultural tourism is already in use in Italy and is intended to allow tourists, wherever they are in EU, to easy access reliable open data based information about cultural sites around them.

Over the last six months, the California Health and Human Services (CHHS) Open Data Portal, which launched with 64 datasets and related visualizations, has grown in size, extending the possibilities of its usage and the powerful stories that can be told about CHHS services. The purpose of the Portal is to “spark innovation, promote research and economic opportunities, engage public participation in government, increase transparency, and inform decision-making” through the ability find and download datasets on the Socrata web platform. A big data project launched by the U.S. Commerce Department brings together major cloud analytics vendors and the Open Cloud Consortium to develop infrastructure needed to access the more than 20 terabytes of satellite weather data generated each day. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a Commerce Department agency, currently manages the daily torrent of observational data collected by weather satellites and other ocean- and land-based sensors. Last month, NOAA and Commerce officials announced a research agreement with cloud providers to develop the infrastructure needed for open, scalable access to weather data. The partners include Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, IBM, Microsoft and the Open Cloud Consortium.

Data Sharing for Public Health Key Lessons from Other Sectors Several recent public health emergencies of international concern have demonstrated a worldwide need for improved surveillance data sharing procedures. Lessons learned from other sectors have the potential to inform the future development of data sharing in the global public health community. At the individual level, the benefits of sharing data have yet to be proven, in any context, and disincentives predominate. Meanwhile, the challenges of achieving truly shared and equitable benefits from data sharing relationships between high-income, and low- and middle-income countries remain largely unrealized.

Pivotal Software Inc. released its first Apache Hadoop distribution based on the Open Data Platform, a controversial new industry consortium designed to further standardized Big Data initiatives. The new Pivotal HD distribution based on Hadoop is part of the company’s enhanced Pivotal Big Data Suite, announced at this week’s EMC World conference in Las Vegas (Pivotal originated as an EMC/VMware “spin-out” joint venture in 2013). Summary:A new transparency project has mined LinkedIn to create a database of the US intelligence community – complete with codewords. The resumes of over 27,000 people working in the US intelligence community were revealed today in a searchable database created by mining LinkedIn. Transparency Toolkit said the database, called ICWatch, includes the public resumes of people working for intelligence contractors, the military and intelligence agencies. The group said the resumes frequently mention secret codewords and surveillance programs. “These resumes include many details about the names and functions of secret surveillance programs, including previously unknown secret codewords,” Transparency Toolkit said.
