At EMC World in Las Vegas this week, Pivotal rolled out enhancements to its big data suite, including major component updates to its Pivotal HD Hadoop distribution and up to 100x performance upgrades to Pivotal Greenplum Database and Pivotal HAWQ. Just a few months ago, Pivotal announced that it would open source its entire big data stack: the Pivotal HD distribution, Pivotal Greenplum Database, Pivotal GemFire real-time distributed data store, Pivotal SQLFire (a SQL layer for the real-time distributed data store), Pivotal GemFire XD (in-memory SQL over HDFS) and the Pivotal HAWQ parallel query engine over HDFS. These updates, says Michael Cucchi, senior director of Outbound Product at Pivotal, underscore Pivotal’s continued commitment to supporting that open source strategy.

LAS VEGAS: EMC has announced plans to release the code of its ViPR Controller to the open source community as part of the firm’s Project CoprHD. EMC will post the code for the ViPR Controller on GitHub in June 2015. The software manages automation and control functionality in storage systems. Project CoprHD has a Mozilla Public Licence 2.0, which allows customers and open source developers to create and improve the tool’s services and applications. ViPR Controller is an automation tool designed to take over many of the mundane tasks performed by IT workers when managing data. EMC listed Project CoprHD as an important step in its bid to create a vendor-neutral central control point and platform for storage automation and in the firm’s wider strategy to aid the open source movement.

Pivotal has bolstered its Big Data portfolio by launching a quicker implementation of its Pivotal Greenplum Database and Pivotal HAWQ, the analytics tools included in the suite. It has also unveiled an update it its Apache Spark framework that runs on Pivotal’s Hadoop distribution. The firm said at EMC World that it is making efforts to ease the deployment of data warehouses based on Big Data that are simpler to integrate with one another. It said that the advancements are “designed to help customers manage ballooning data sets driven by mobile, cloud, social, and the Internet of Things, and to tackle the most complex queries across these data sets at unprecedented speed, scale, and flexibility”.

Pivotal Software, Inc. is making an appearance at its parent company’s EMC World 2015 summit this week with an updated analytics stack touted as capable of performing certain operations exponentially faster than before. The upgrade is the first major milestone for the spin-off since the release of its core technologies to the open-source ecosystem. The Pivotal Big Data Suite improves upon that freely-available base with a new cost-based optimizer for the relational component, Greenplum Database, that automatically determines the fastest way to fetch inormation in order to speed requests. The company says that the technology can execute some complex requests up to 100 times faster than the older query mechanism it replaces.

The Towns Through Time app was developed by Appiwork as part of the NSW Government’s apps4NSW competition, the first state government apps competition in Australia. Launching the app, NSW Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said the app makes it easier for NSW residents to learn about the history of their local towns. “The new app presents complex and detailed imagery and data in a way that allow users to take themselves on a historic tour of NSW. It demonstrates the value of opening up government archives to private sector innovation. “As a result of the NSW Government’s commitment to open data, information which previously sat dormant in the bureaucracy is now being used by developers to put the pages of history in people’s hands.
