Recently, Ohio boosted financial transparency when the Treasurer’s Office made state-level financial data easily accessible through its new online checkbook. This move took the state from near the bottom to the top spot on U.S. PIRG’s “Follow the Money” poll, a ranking of transparency in state government spending. The tool gives taxpayers easy access to information about where their tax dollars are being spent. Now, in what appears to be the first time a state has expanded transparency initiatives to every level of local government, lawmakers are taking the state’s open data efforts a step further: Ohio state Rep.

Open data is sweeping the world as government after government seeks to publish data and reap the hoped-for benefits: increased transparency, accountability and efficiency. One of the former coalition government’s flagship policies was to request all English local authorities publish all their spending over £500. This, the government argued, would bring all sorts of good things. Councils would experience a revolution in openness and accountability, and citizens would become auditors from the comfort of their own armchairs. As well as unleashing a new roving public eye over council accounts, it would also encourage developers to create all sorts of clever spending apps. However, there has been less interest in the data than many hoped.

Data visualization is the mechanism of taking tabular or spatial data and conveying it in a human-friendly and visual way. There are several open source tools that can help you create useful, informative graphs. In this post we will take a look at eight open source, data visualization tools. Datawrapper was created by journalism organizations from Europe, designed to make data visualization easy for news institutes. Based on a web based GUI (graphics user interface), it promises to let you create a graph in just four steps. To create a graph, click on the “New Chart” link on the top menu bar. You can then paste your data in the text area; then, the tool analyzes it and shows you the preview. If everything is fine, you can publish it.

Richard Lee writes The notion of data science was born from the recent idea that if you have enough data, you don’t need much (if any) science to divine the truth and foretell the future – as opposed to the long-established rigours of statistical or actuarial science, which most times require painstaking efforts and substantial time to produce their version of ‘the truth’. Practitioners of this so-called science are the self-proclaimed data scientists, purported to be the sexiest job one can have today. The data scientist is a catch-all role, which defies a common definition but claims to do anything you want with any data you have.

Burkina Faso is now launching its new new Burkina Open Data Initiative (BODI) in the nation’s capital Ouagadougou.  The initiative aims to grow its existing 50 open government datasets to develop a full version launching in September.  The datasets already include details of numbers of beds in public and private hospitals, numbers of malaria deaths and vaccination coverate.  Ranked as the third poorest country globally, Burkina Faso is located in West Africa  and aims to use the access that this open data initiative provides to drive economic growth, boost innovation and demonstrate transparency.

In April, Santa Monica’s Open Data Initiative was ranked number 38 in the 2015 InformationWeek Elite 100; a list of the top business technology innovators in the United States. One of only a handful of local governments in the ranking, this designation groups Santa Monica with the very best in the country at developing practical and measurable uses for technology that drive real business value.
