Michiganders can now map out numerous data sets such as transportation routes and workforce demographics with a new online tool unveiled by the state Department of Technology, Management & Budget. The state’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Open Data portal allows users to “browse, search, preview and download a variety of Michigan geospatial data sets and view them on a map,” DTMB said in a news release. The site, at gis.michigan.opendata.arcgis.com, offers data important to everything from economic development to tourism, the release said. It is one of numerous data sets the state has made available online at michigan.gov/openmichigan.

With OPenn, new discoveries are inevitable. In May, Penn Libraries launched the new resource for accessing its digitized material. OPenn’s purpose is to make its content, such as rare books and manuscripts, simple to view, and also easier for re-use. Plus, it’s open to the public—there’s no Penn login information needed. As explained on the OPenn website, it contains complete sets of high-resolution archival images of cultural heritage material from the collections of its contributing institutions, along with machine-readable descriptive and technical metadata. That will make doing particular studies much more attainable. For example, say a researcher wanted to highlight all the illuminated initials in the Penn Collections.

To take advantage of the next chapter in open data and data-driven strategy, numerous localities unveiled plans on June 9 to test out a new kind of data platform — one that leverages both open and internal data similar to a utility service. The new tech comes from the open data company Socrata, which has collaborated with jurisdictions across the U.S. to develop a platform that centralizes government data into a user-friendly feed. Socrata CEO Kevin Merritt unveiled the Data-as-a-Utility cloud service as Socrata’s first data-as-a-service (DaaS) platform.

Esri has launched its Human Health and Climate Change App Challenge, with more than $15,000 offered in prizes. The competition is seeking people across all industries to create apps that help communities visualise, understand and combat the health impacts of climate change. The app challenge is part of Esri’s effort in support of the White House Climate Data Initiative under US President Obama’s Climate Action Plan. Participants are encouraged to create apps using Esri’s ArcGIS platform and use open data and Esri apps, maps, services, and APIs. Apps should help both private and public organisations combine open data to gain new insights into the impacts of climate change on health, aid decision making and help the public to take action.
