NC Datapalooza held its official kickoff last month during the third annual NC DataJam event held at the American Underground @ Main. Organizers led almost 80 attendees through ideation sessions and education sessions before six teams presented their ideas. With only a few hours to prepare and sift through numerous open data sets from local, state, and federal repositories, teams put together 5-minute presentations to a panel of esteemed judges. Teams will continue to compete for the $5,000 grand prize, including seed funding. Over the next 90-days they will finesse their projects and drive towards the final NC Datapalooza event in September. Teams can still enter the competition until June 13. Organizers hope to attract additional interest from CityCamp NC (citycampnc.

Unlikely bedfellows finding common ground? Maybe the power of A/C on a sweltering D.C. evening had something to do with it. The progressive populist Ralph Nader and the anti-tax conservative Grover Norquist together championed open government data this week – though after a fairly optimistic conversation, Nader capped things off – in typical “Unsafe at Any Speed” style — with a heavy dose of trepidation. Uncle Sam’s data needs to be open to the public, Nader and Norquist heartily agreed. “Never underestimate the bureaucracy’s creativity,” Nader said of agencies quibbling over data formats as a stalling tactic or delivering FOIA’d documents in the least usable formats possible.

In a recent blog post, Dan Slee, director of the communications and PR website Comms2Point0, suggested that open data has a problem. ‘Until enough open data geeks speak human’ he said, ‘open data will not realise its potential’. His solution was this: ‘Tell people what problem you faced. Not the code problem but the actual real world problem. Then tell them what cracked it. Then mention there’s a bit of open data under the bonnet that helped’. Sheffield’s first Making a Difference with Data event will be, at least in part, a chance for the rest of the world to get a first look at the bold partnerships between a vibrant open data community and a council that is seeking to create the environment and infrastructure to realise open data benefits.

Enterprises like choices, they abhor vendor lock in, and they like the options that open source gives. But at the same time, too many choices fragments markets and doesn’t allow for the cultivation of larger vendors that can afford to take on the big problems. You need a balance between large enough to scale and so large as to be too overbearing, or sometimes, in the antitrust sense, to be abusive. With the Hadoop Summit sponsored by Hortonworks going on this week and some tectonic changes in the systems market that have been going on for some months now, we are pondering how this all fits together given the current state of both Hadoop and the systems markets.

An early supporter of open data was a downer, government watchdogs were positive and one fed kept telling his colleagues to go get advice from the private sector – for free. “I am emphatically not paid to be optimistic,” said Chris Mihm, managing director of strategic issues at the Government Accountability Office. But he said he can’t help but feel positive about the effort agencies are pouring into open data – time and money that will help make his job a lot easier. The big question facing agencies following enactment of the 2014 Digital Accountability and Transparency Act, Mihm noted, was “to go small and compliant or go big and value-added.” He said he has been impressed to see most going with the latter, better-in-the-long-run option.

Hortonworks unveiled the first new release of its Hadoop distribution in six months earlier this week. With Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) 2.3, the company is focusing on strengthening security, governance, and operations, and just generally making Hadoop easier and more visual to use. A lot has transpired since Hortonworks shipped HDP 2.2 last December, including the company’s IPO in December, the formation of the controversial Open Data Platform (ODP) industry consortium in February, the opening of a new headquarters in Santa Clara, California, the creation of the Data Governance Initiative (DGI), the acquisition of Sequence IQ, and a continued hiring binge.
