C4 director Cynthia Gabriel said issues unrelated to national security should not be kept under wraps from the public, and pointed to Cabinet discussions on proposed toll hikes, Lembaga Tabung Haji’s purchase of land from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and Putrajaya’s purchase of a new jet.

Although many researchers agree that scientific data should be open to scrutiny to ferret out poor analyses and outright fraud, most raw data sets are not available on demand. There are many reasons researchers do not open their data, and one is technical. It is often time consuming to prepare and archive data. In response my [Rouder’s] lab has automated the process such that our data are archived the night they are created without any human approval or action. All data are versioned, logged, time stamped, and uploaded including aborted runs and data from pilot subjects. The archive is GitHub github.com, the world’s largest collection of open-source materials. Data archived in this manner are called born open.

The Intellibins(TM) app is an easy-to-use, location-based mobile app giving users the ability to locate the nearest public recycling location while they are on-the-go. Initially developed for Google Glass, Intellibins is a practical take on the geolocation of recycling points. Users open the app, select the item he/she wishes to recycle, and select a nearby recycling point from the locations identified on the map. Intellibins anticipates that the average user will be someone who prioritizes recycling or someone who would prioritize recycling if more recycling locations were readily available.

While public health officials now believe the worst of the epidemic is behind us, it is not yet over, and questions raised by the previous work still await answers. To provide them, a global team from Harvard University, the Broad Institute, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID, part of the National Institutes of Health), along with many other institutions, sequenced more than 200 additional genomes from Ebola virus samples, to capture the fullest picture yet of how the virus is transmitted and how it has changed over the long-term outbreak. In an effort to enhance the global response, this team made their data publicly available as it was produced throughout last year.

It may indeed be possible to save the world with a click. Digital humanitarianism is a new grass-roots movement that employs advanced technologies (like robots), social media (and crowdsourcing), and cutting-edge computing (like artificial intelligence) to accelerate relief efforts during major disasters such as the recent Nepal earthquake. In essence, Digital humanitarianism uses crowd-sourcing, social media, aerial imagery, and disaster mapping to save lives and find actionable data in the flood of information following a disaster. The idea originated as part of Patrick Meier’s personal endeavor to locate a family member on Jan. 12, 2010, in the aftermath of the devastating Haiti earthquake.

The federal government already has a great deal of talent in data science, but agencies aren’t organized to best leverage it for their programs, said Federal Chief Information Officer Tony Scott. “I think we haven’t self organized in a way that is as effective as it could possibly be,” Scott said June 18 during the ATARC Federal Big Data Summit in Washington, D.C. “I think in each agency there needs to probably be some sort of governance and some sort of data committee who not only understands what it is that that agency has, but sort of creates the big rules by which they’re going to operate.” The U.S. Agency for International Development is an early adopter of such a model.

Tyler Kleykamp believes we’re all data people, regardless of our coding or technology skills. As Connecticut’s chief data officer, Kleykamp spearheaded the open data movement in his state. The effort began as a way to explore how businesses received state money through tax credits, loans and grants. By opening up the data, it came to light that these lending practices were beneficial to the state of Connecticut. To continue develop better policies and measure the outcome of programs, Kleykamp insists open data technology is key. “We’re going to consistently be asked to do more with less, in government.” he said. “We have to find ways to be efficient to be more effective.
