After working on many data stories over the years, I’ve figured out a good set of best practices that I wanted to share. It’s not the only way, but it’s been the best way for me to tell a story with data. I can’t emphasize this enough. These days, I try to digitize every single piece of a story — notes, photos, audio, video, documents. How? A couple of useful tools: DocumentCloud — Allows you to upload PDFs and performs Optical Character Recognition, aka OCR. OCR takes a document and scans it to make it searchable by word. Not perfect by a long shot, but a start. DocumentCloud also has amazing embed features allowing you to highlight and annotate passages. And, finally, it has a janky but usable timeline creator and a very good entity recognition engine. It’s available to IRE members.

Speaking at Cannes Lions this week, Tim Berners-Lee outlined his view on artificial intelligence as media agency PHD launches its book ‘Sentience: the coming AI revolution and the implications for marketing’. Marketing has published an exclusive extract from the book today. Berners-Lee shot down the usual view of physical robots running the world, positing instead that artificial intelligence will actually comprise businesses driven by algorithmic decisions as data becomes free and open to use. He envisaged robot holding companies that could move and make investment decisions based on data and algorithms  – and without human input.

The Open Register of Patent Ownership (ORoPO) seeks to tackle one of the more complex, convoluted, and often expensive issues facing new businesses: determining who owns the world’s patents. Voluntary and non-profit, ORoPO already offers online the details of patents owned by its founding members: ARM, BAE Systems, Conversant, Finjan, IBM, Microsoft, Patent Properties, and Shazam. Currently information as to who owns patents is recorded at 180 patent offices worldwide, ORoPO said. But it estimates that 25 percent of this information is inaccurate, incomplete, or out of date. This inaccuracy has “serious consequences for the exploitation of the intellectual property assets that now account for up to 70 percent of enterprise value”.

Data sharing between farmers has the potential to generate improved efficiency and productivity, while also contributing to a better use of resources, but only when data collection and sharing systems start to work properly. That was the message issued by Copa-cogeca after their “big data for farmers and cooperatives” conference in Brussels. “Big data, precision farming, drones, robots are all now part of the farming vocabulary and are a reality in many farms and cooperatives across Europe, promising to revamp the industry,” said Copa-cogeca secretary-general, Pekka Pesonen, before adding that “not enough” is currently known about the performance of information systems or the collection and sharing of data to deliver full-value benefits to farmers.

This might surprise you, but success is all about structure. As a matter of fact, we do not get better, we do not change our behavior, and we do not become successful without it! Yet, most people don’t. Not only is having and utilizing structure a challenge, but you have the added test of incorporating the right structure – meaning a structure that fits the situation and personalities involved, including yours. Yet, it’s critical. In my years of coaching and research on change, I have learned one key lesson, which has near-universal applicability: We do not get better without structure. My friend and former coaching client Alan Mulally knew this and used his concept of organizational structure when he was CEO of Ford. It was off-the-shelf structure, but it was his shelf.

In the chief data officer world there are haves and have nots. At the Federal Reserve, CDO Micheline Casey has a team of 46 and a budget of about $12 million working on expanding the data organization, and thinking about how to incorporate new data and new information signals into economic forecasts. At other federal agencies, the CDO is a one person show, who has to generate institutional support through their own efforts, and the backing of key leaders. According to Casey, who pioneered the role in government serving in Colorado as the first CDO of any state, doing data management and data stewardship on the cheap is a recipe for disaster. “The reality is, it’s really difficult to do this job,” Casey said at Washington, D.C., event hosted by Nextgov.
