At least 8,000 datasets are to be opened up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) over the next year, in what is claimed to be UK government’s biggest move so far in pursuing the open data campaign. Environment secretary Elizabeth Truss (pictured) highlighted the potential to support the food and farming industry by giving farmers and the food and environment industries access to the data and through the development of relevant data services. She said it would support the productivity of farming and the food industry, and support the leisure industry through relevant environmental information. The new data releases will include imagery from the Copernicus satellite system that can pinpoint soil and microclimates around the country.

The South Australian government has released a new web map that shows all of the state’s spatial data in one place. “It is a really innovative tool that turns quite complex individual data sets into very valuable, user-friendly information that will support collaboration between government and industry and bring benefits to a wide range of people,” says Byron Riessen, general manager of the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA). The map includes rest stops for long drives, walking trails, the location of every boat ramp in the state, mineral license applications and current leases, school zones, air quality, public transport options, school zones, healthcare facilities and more.

But as venture-funded startups from elsewhere are following their forebears in setting up shop here, one startup is challenging that dynamic.Mapbox, a five-year-old open mapping company that develops customizable maps for more than 5,000 clients including Pinterest , payment company Square, Shopify, and grocery delivery startup Instacart , set up an office in Bengaluru early this year. Yorkshire Water is set to host a ‘Water Challenge Data Dive’ into the deep end of water analytics. Taking place on the weekend of 10-11th July 2015 in partnership with ODI Leeds, a Node of the Open Data Institute (ODI), participants will learn how to interrogate data about water flow and usage across Yorkshire Water’s distribution system to help reduce future consumption. Yorkshire Water aims to reduce water usage by five litres per person per day by 2020. As well as attracting water sector professionals, the two-day event is expected to appeal to citizens, technologists and data experts who are keen to find innovative ways to exploit data.

The World Bank on Wednesday approved a total of $100 million for Tanzania to help increase transparency and accountability in governance, and to help improve public financial management.
