“SB 272 requires local agencies to make a catalog of their enterprise systems used to store and maintain, update local data. What this is really about is in the effort to figure out how to, how to move forward in data collection, and what are we going to do in the government.” – Senator Bob Hertzberg (D – Van Nuys) Government in California involves thousands of state and local agencies that provide critical services. Developing and managing public programs – and improving results – require a holistic view of how these agencies operate and how they can work better together. Today that is nearly impossible, but the passage of SB 272 and other “Open Data” bills could make it more possible.

The NSW government will invest millions of dollars in STEM education as well as small business in a bid to create the jobs of the future. However, Sydney MP Alex Greenwich says the state budget does little to help tech startups. The Baird government recorded a $2.5 billion surplus yesterday when it handed down its 2015-16 state budget. Infrastructure and small business have walked away as the major winners, with companies that don’t pay payroll tax eligible for a $2000 grant if they hire a new employee. The budget also outlines $10.3 million over four years to support a “maths and science initiative” to ensure students are equipped for the jobs of the future.

MAKATI CITY, June 25—Transparency measures and other governance reforms drove more foreign direct investments into the country, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) highlighted in a press conference on Wednesday. PIDS President Gilbert M. Llanto who presented the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s World Investment Report for 2015, lauded the recent efforts of the Department of Budget and Management and the Office of the President to make government data available online through the Open Data initiative. Government agencies were asked to constitute a team that will manage the data and make these available online.

Environment secretary Elizabeth Truss is due to announce that at least 8,000 datasets held by Defra will be released during the next year in what she describes as “the single biggest government data giveaway the UK has ever seen”. The South West Norfolk MP said harnessing this open data will give food and farming businesses access to cutting-edge techniques to boost efficiency and productivity, and allow better monitoring and management of environmental risks. Open access to satellite imagery to help farmers assess crops and pinpoint places with the best soils is being made available by Defra. Giving farmers access to satellite imagery is part of the government department’s new open data strategy to help farmers boost efficiency and productivity. Under the plans, announced on Thursday (25 June), Defra will release more than 8,000 datasets containing detailed information about food and farming to the public. Google has announced plans to open a new data center in Jackson County, Alabama, and will be doing it on the grounds of an old decommissioned power plant. Google’s state-of-the-art data center will replace the Widows Creek Fossil Plant, owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and located on the Guntersville Reservoir of the Tennessee River in northeast Alabama. The power plant will officially shut down its last turbo-generator in October 2015, and construction on modifying the existing power plant facilities is expected to start next year. The Widows Creek power plant has been in business since 1952, and at one point it had eight generators running.
