Four years ago, Curt Savoie was talking with someone in the then-Boston mayor’s administration about data. This guy said perhaps the worst thing you could say to a data scientist: “The mayor doesn’t care about data, he cares about people.” Savoie is Boston’s principal data scientist, so that was a bummer. But the more he thought about it, the more he disagreed with that whiff of mutual exclusivity. Data is about people, he thought. “The data is these bread crumbs, these little bits and pieces, this digital archive of interactions with each other, with the government, with the world around us, and it’s all of these little traces of that life in the city,” Savoie said.

Great news for open data advocates in California: Attorney General Kamala Harris’ office has reversed a recent policy decision that would have locked down data collected by California Department of Justice (CADOJ). Back in May, we wrote about how the CADOJ had denied our request for machine-readable, alternative versions of the California Electronic Interceptions Report, an enormous dataset detailing the costs and effectiveness of wiretaps across the state. The version exclusively available online was an unwieldy PDF that made it difficult to breakdown and analyze. But a CADOJ lawyer explained that, under new security protocols, the office would only provide copies in a “locked PDF” format in order to preserve the “integrity of the data.

Cities are sitting on mounds of data generated by everything from parking meters to traffic lights to water meters, but they’re having difficulty harnessing that data effectively. As the big data and Internet of Things (IoT) trends evolve, we’ll see cities competing with one another to use data to serve citizens, and that’s where vendors like Los Angeles-based Civic Resource Group International are hoping to step in. Yesterday in downtown LA, CRGI showcased what the future of a connected city might look like. About 70 attendees packed into the Vortex Dome at LA Studios to take in a demo of its CRGI’s new Civic Augmented Reality (CivicAR) product, which is essentially a mobile app that extends its Civic Connect suite of software into the real world.

Steve Faulkner left his home of Madison, Wis., this summer. It was a place where he cofounded and ran a music startup, co-owned a coworking space and built civic apps. Now Faulkner, 27, is living with his fiancé just south of Rittenhouse Square (Fitler Square sounds about right). We chatted with him about why he’s running his startup, Murfie, from Philly, the differences between Philly and Madison’s open data scene and the last civic app he worked on.
