The negotiations between Indonesia and the European Union to exempt Indonesia’s timber products from a due diligence process at the European market has suffered a setback as the Environment and Forestry Ministry is now mired in a legal dispute. The ministry’s director general of sustainable forest products management, Ida Bagus Putera Parthama, said on Friday that the recent legal proceedings at the Central Information Commission (KIP), in which the ministry was being sued by Forest Watch Indonesia (FWI) for refusing to release what the ministry deems to be confidential documents, had caused concern among EU members. “This [legal matter] has a great impact [on our negotiations with the EU]. Our biggest hurdle right now is regarding open data,” he said.

Im Rahmen der Open Data Vorlesung 2015 der Forschungsstelle Digitale Nachhaltigkeit an der Universität Bern haben 20 Studierende-Teams selber Open Data Applikationen entwickelt. Die meisten Studierenden haben durch diese Veranstaltung erstmals programmieren gelernt. Die interaktiven Apps basieren vorwiegend auf der Open Source JavaScript-Bibliothek D3.js und visualisieren Daten von unterschiedlichen Behörden, Firmen und anderen Datenquellen. Nachfolgend die rangierte Liste der Apps, wie sie im Rahmen der Abschlusspräsentation (PDF-Slideshare und Podcast) von einer unabhängigen Jury von 22 Personen bewertet wurden. Bei Switch sind ausserdem alle Videoaufzeichnungen der Vorlesung inkl. Folienpräsentationen sowie die Präsentationen aus der Programmierübung veröffentlicht.

Eyeing Government Contracts, Microsoft Is Planning To Open 3 Hyper Scale Data Centers In India; Pune May Be A Possible Location Microsoft India chairman Bhaskar Pramanik has shared that by the end of 2015, Microsoft will open their three hyper scale data centers in India. Although not yet confirmed, but speculations are rife that these three locations would be Pune, Mumbai and Chennai. Microsoft will invest $22.7million in creating state of the art, advanced cloud based data centers. Bhaskar said, “If the government has to address 1.2 billion citizens then it needs hyper-scale data centres at an affordable cost, with technology and flexibility.” Earlier this year, we had reported that Maharashtra Govt. will store all citizens’ record on Microsoft’s Azure Cloud platform.

The minister was speaking following a workshop on open map and open data held at the Mona School of Business, University of the West Indies. Min. Robinson said “Open Data is a tremendous resource that offers prospects for wealth creation.” He remarked, by making government data available to technology innovators and entrepreneurs it provides them the opportunity to develop applications for various sectors The minister also highlighted that “ open Government data also serves to enhance public sector transparency and accountability.

Close to 500 delegates from 40 countries have attended a conference in London to explore the challenges of open science for research libraries. The event was organised by LIBER (Ligue des Bibliothèques Européennes de Recherche/Association of European Research Libraries), a network of 404 university libraries, national libraries and research institutions. Since open science is a priority for the European Commission and libraries are seeking to provide greater access to their materials right across the Continent, this was adopted as the theme of its annual conference, held at the University of London’s Senate House on 24-26 June.

In this case, the fire department is partnering with the city’s office of innovation and technology to develop its data sets. That data is available online at www.phila.gov/data/inventory. Visitors to the site can click the comments tab to leave their thoughts and suggestions. The site also features a submission form for members of the public to provide feedback about which data sets are important to citizens. The feedback will be used to prioritize the next set of open data releases from the streets department. The fire department is the eighth city department to publish a data inventory, a major component of the city’s new open data process. “This release is an invitation for the public to participate in the fire department’s transparency initiatives,” said Fire Commissioner Derrick J.

With the government publishing data too late, in a format you can’t easily analyse, and with so few details as to be almost meaningless, the sad answer is: not quite yet. Corruption has been getting a lot of attention recently. Who could have ignored the sheer scale and brazenness of what’s been alleged at FIFA? The total value of bribes involved is yet to be determined, but estimates suggest it could go into tens of millions of dollars, possibly even hundreds of millions, all spanning over many decades. When announcing the charges the US Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, said the indictment alleges corruption that is “rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted”.

Now, with less than a year left in office, President Aquino has yet to fulfill this promise. And time is clearly running out.
