This policy will guide the operations of government ministries, departments and agencies in facilitating greater and more convenient public access to government data, particularly for utilisation in entrepreneurial ventures deemed potentially capable of generating billions of dollars for the economy. When fully implemented, this will be consistent with the Government’s Job Creation and Economic Growth Strategy, focusing on the development and growth of key productive industries such as the micro, small and medium-size enterprise (MSME) sector.

The Fair Trading Commissioner is encouraging people to have their say on a new Public Register of Consumer Complaints received by NSW Fair Trading. Commissioner, Rod Stowe said NSW Fair Trading received more than 45,000 complaints last year about traders across various industries, including retail, motor vehicles, telecommunications, travel and real estate. “The proposed Register will provide information regarding the number of complaints received about individual traders and is expected to act as an incentive for businesses to improve the way they deal with consumer issues,” he said. Commissioner Stowe is seeking community feedback to develop the Register via a Survey asking consumers about complaint information that is important to them.

As part of Governor Basuki “Ahok” Purnama Tjahaja’s program to make Jakarta into a “Smart City,” today the government launched a brand new open website, data.jakarta.go.id The site gives the general public access to numerous information sets from the government’s regional work units (SKPD) in areas such as health, education and transportation. The hope is that giving the public access to this data will not only increase transparency but also allow people to create tools to better disseminate and utilize the information.”I have always believed that we are no different from developed countries. We all eat rice. One of things that keeps us behind is a lack of open data and transparency.

The opening general session of this year’s American Library Association (ALA) conference in San Francisco was a feel-good fest, thanks largely to the good luck and good planning that ALA demonstrated in booking Roberta Kaplan, lawyer for the Supreme Court case that overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, as the opening keynote. On the two-year anniversary of that case, the Court found in favor of marriage equality, turning Kaplan’s speech into an emotional victory celebration punctuated with standing ovations.

Technology entrepreneurs are being encouraged to attend GovHack, a competitive 46-hour technology event with a focus on ways to use and display government information. The Dunedin version of GovHack, which is run throughout Australia and New Zealand, is being organised by local tech specialist Phil Wheeler, of Intergen, a company specialising in apps and design. The event was ”a bit like the 24-hour film festival” with a focus on using and displaying information already available to the public by way of a website, an app or interactive graphics, he said. ”What we’re really looking for is creative people who want to have a crack at this sort of stuff [and] meet the same sort of people,” Mr Wheeler said.

This is an update to my earlier blog post on Citizenship and Immigration Canada withholding information about the countries our immigrants come from. Several people have helpfully pointed out that some of this data can be found on the Government of Canada’s open data portal or obtained from other sources. Here I should emphasize that the data I have but can’t report includes statistics from 2014, which I have not been able to find anywhere else. On Friday Citizenship and Immigration Canada sent me a letter stating that the data cannot, in fact, be obtained through Access to Information, contradicting an earlier statement by one of their communications staffers.

The Jakarta administration launched on Tuesday an open data website where residents can access data held by the city administration as part of its effort to achieve transparency. Jakarta Development Planning Board (Bappeda) head Tuty Kusumawati said residents could access the city’s data through data.jakarta.go.id. She stated that Jakarta was the first regional government in Indonesia to provide such access for residents. “We will gradually open up all our data through the website in order to achieve transparency. We also want residents to understand more about the city administration,” Tuty said during the launch at City Hall. She went on to say that currently there were 403 sets of data uploaded on the website, including that of the city budget.
