Long Beach is following other major U.S. cities, such as Philadelphia and Chicago, in modernizing how it makes government information available. The City Council voted Tuesday in favor of a request from Mayor Robert Garcia to direct the city manager to develop an open data policy that could lead to standardized sharing and presentation of information on a city-maintained website. Garcia’s initiative is aimed at increasing transparency and accountability while accelerating innovation through collaboration between community stakeholders. Last month, a new city website was unveiled, www.longbeach.gov. The roughly $212,000 project was the first overhaul of Long Beach’s government portal since 2004 and included, among other features, the data repository “openLB.

In an effort to foster a transparent and open government, Greater Sudbury has launched its Open Data Portal, which will provide residents access to municipal government data and information. In a news release Wednesday, the city said open data is one four pillars of the open government model adopted by Greater Sudbury Council in March 2015, along with open information, open dialogue and open doors. “Open data is the idea that certain data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control,” the release said. “City council is committed to open and transparent government,” Mayor Brian Bigger is quoted as saying in the release.

LONDON — Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, is leading the charge to keep data neutral, open and free. “We may have a revolution where people are demanding their data back,” Berners-Lee said at Bloomberg’s offices in London. “Consumers of the world need to make it very clear that they want control, they want access to their data, they want access to open government data.” Some 25 years after Berners-Lee defined the Web’s key languages in HTTP and HTML, he is calling for a written bill of online rights respected by governments and companies. Consumers should be able to claim their information from the centralized cloud, he said in an interview. There should be free access to sites, freedom of expression and sharing of information, such as that on health, he said.

Nine localities — at  both the city and county level — have committed to a set of open data building and construction permit standards, a move primed to boost insights into the housing market and propel civic app development. On July 15, an alliance of cities, counties and companies from the civic tech and real-estate industries announced the Building and Land Development Specification 1.0. (BLDS, pronounced as “builds”) open data standard. Civic engagement company Accela, based in San Ramon, Calif., led the joint endeavor to support civic collaboration and to complement its cloud offerings — many of which are based in building and construction services. The standard is available on GitHub and via the BLDS collaboration site at Permitdata.org.

It its quest to foster more openness and accountability, the city announced on Wednesday it has launched its open data portal. Considered one of the four pillars of the open-government model council adopted in March — which includes open data, information, dialogue and doors — it will provide residents access to Greater Sudbury’s municipal government data and information. “City council is committed to open and transparent government,” Mayor Brian Bigger said Wednesday in a media release. “By providing municipal datasets to the public, we want citizens to have a greater understanding of the city and empower them to use the data to lead, innovate and ultimately create better systems and procedures that will improve service and save money.

It’s been awhile since you could credibly call Denver title town, and don’t get me started on CU football, but if they hung banners for good government the Colorado Secretary of State’s office would be looking at a three-peat next year. The National Association of Secretaries of State gave its 2015 IDEAS award to Wayne Williams, who picked up the same award Scott Gessler brought home last year. The prize lauds Go Code Colorado, the collaboration between the Gessler/Williams’ office, Gov. John Hickenlooper’s office, the Office of Information Technology and the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade to put more state-managed data on the Internet.

Sixteen teams and six individuals have won $35,000 in WA prizes at GovHack Perth 2015. Minister for Finance, Bill Marmion said the winners’ interpretation of a wide range of Government data had thrown up some exciting innovations, with potential public and private sector applications. “Government Agencies contributed dozens of datasets for interpretation at GovHack, plus $19,000 to the WA prize pool, with the focus on delivering practical outcomes,” Mr Marmion said. “The winning ideas will be pitched to the Public Sector and evaluated on their potential to improve service delivery.” He said that from past experience, there could also be some promising commercial applications.

More than six times as many data sets are now available online from the Alberta government compared to a year ago, a trend the minister responsible for open data says he aims to continue well into the future. “Information is becoming more and more and accessible and that’s definitely a priority of our government,” Service Alberta Minister Deron Bilous said Monday. “There’s no reason for information not to made public.” A total of 1,695 data sets were online at the end of the government’s 2014/15 fiscal year, according to the recently published Service Alberta annual report, up 525 per cent from the 271 data sets available the year before.
