The World Wide Web Foundation criticised the Government for justifying its review of information freedom laws by citing the UK’s position at the top of the Foundation’s prestigious Open Data Barometer – an annual worldwide survey of open government. The controversial review is widely perceived as a bid by the Government and Whitehall to limit information freedom laws and its ability to hold them to account. Anne Jellema, chief executive of the World Wide Web Foundation, said: “We were frustrated to learn the UK Government has used its ranking in our Open Data Barometer (ODB) in an effort to justify a move that could water down the Freedom of Information Act.

While for much of its history since the great famine of the eighteenth century Ireland has been synonymous with mass emigration, the 23rd ISMB (Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology) meeting sailing into the regenerated “Silicon Docks” of Dublin last week was a homecoming of sorts for the annual gathering of the global Bioinformatics community. Having Michael Levitt as the opening keynote, felt like a victory parade for the field’s first nobel laureate (alongside his co-recipients Martin Karplus and Arieh Warshel), and vindication that computational biology and bioinformatics had come of age.

A Star analysis has found downtown councillors get about 1,000 views on their toronto.ca pages per month, up to twice as many as colleagues from other parts of the city. And the farther from downtown wards are, the more likely their councillors have low views, a phenomenon some experts say speaks to a divided city with unequal civic engagement. The statistics were obtained through the city’s Open Data portal and have been rounded to the nearest whole number; they start from the beginning of the councillors’ terms and go up to last month. “In the old days, no residents were that far from city hall, from their councillors’ offices, because there were six city halls,” he said.

The provincial government is dishing out $70,000 in prize money to Albertans who can create a smartphone app that utilizes the government’s open data portal — and Albertans get to help pick the winners. Service Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Innovates Technology Futures, launched an online competition on Friday to see how the government’s open data can be used to create applications that provide value to Albertans. “Making information accessible is just one way our government is demonstrating our commitment to transparency. This competition is an interactive way to introduce more Albertans to the wealth of data that’s available to them,” said Service Alberta Minister Deron Bilous in a news release.

An additional 100 datasets were added to the data.gov.au website in June, according to the monthly report prepared by the data.gov.au team. The website provides both downloadable datasets and links to online data services provided by other government sources, with the Office of the Australian Government Chief Technology Officer (AGCTO) in the Department of Finance responsible for its development, support and ongoing operation. According to the report, the extra datasets were followed by a torrent of data from this year’s GovHack competitions staged over the weekend of 3-6 July.
