The Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA), a consortium with more than 400 members which is dedicated to accelerating adoption of interoperable solutions and services for cloud computing, aims to clear the ‘open cloud’ confusion with a paper explaining what the term means. In the paper, the members of the ODCA, which includes Intel, Infosys, BMW, Microsoft among others, have tried to explain what ‘open’ means for them. “The technology industry has spent the last several years assigning the term ‘open’ to all manner of new trade associations and initiatives. Now it has so many meanings, it’s actually become fodder for debate. As members of the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA), we can start by stating what “open” means to us,” the paper stated.

Microbial Genomics (MGen), the Society for General Microbiology’s first journal with an open data policy, is pleased to report a partnership with Figshare, to support authors with publishing their supporting data. Microbial Genomics publishes articles that use genomic approaches to further our understanding of microbiology, from clinically important pathogens to microbial life in diverse ecosystems. Authors submitting articles to MGen are required to archive any supporting data, protocols, software and/or programmes that have led to the conclusions drawn in the paper, which will be peer reviewed alongside the paper for relevance.

Three final year students of Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) – Ayodele Adeyemo (Remote Sensing and GIS); Eyitemi Egbejule (Electrical Electronics Engineering); and Eyo Okon Eyo (Computer Science) have launched an Open Data Access Portal (NODA), making data in Nigeria available for Nigerians and the World, free of charge and without restrictions. The NODA project was unveiled in Akure, Ondo State at an event graced by data experts including Seun Inigbinde of BudgIT,  Nkechi Nkwuone from the School of Data and Oludotun Babayemi from Connected Development. The portal includes data on all schools, hospitals, water point (boreholes), close to 98% of roads, all rivers and all settlements in Nigeria.

This is the fourth in a series of posts on data related the Millennium Development Goals based on the 2015 Edition of World Development Indicators. Millennium Development Goal 4  is to “Reduce child mortality” and is measured against a target to “Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate”. It includes indicators to measure the under-5 mortality rate, the infant mortality rate and the proportion of 1-year olds immunized against measles. In 1990 13 million children died before their fifth birthday, by 1999 it was less than 10 million, and by 2013 it had fallen to just over 6 million. This means that at least 17,000 fewer children now die each day compared with 1990.

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, is leading the charge to keep data neutral, open and free. “We may have a revolution where people are demanding their data back,” Berners-Lee said at Bloomberg’s offices in London. “Consumers of the world need to make it very clear that they want control, they want access to their data, they want access to open government data.” Some 25 years after Berners-Lee defined the Web’s key languages in HTTP and HTML, he is calling for a written bill of online rights respected by governments and companies. Consumers should be able to claim their information from the centralized cloud, he said in an interview. There should be free access to sites, freedom of expression and sharing of information, such as that on health, he said.

Don’t Miss the CitySDK Open Data Solutions Challenge this Month, with a chance to demo your app to Commerce Chief Data Officer Ian Kalin. Earlier this summer, the U.S. Census Bureau announced the “City SDK Open Data Solutions Challenge.” This challenge is now in the homestretch with submissions accepted through the end of July, encouraging developers to use the Census Bureau’s new City Software Development Kit (SDK). Challenge finalists will have the opportunity to demo their apps to the U.S. Department of Commerce Chief Data Officer, Ian Kalin. Since the CitySDK’s initial launch during the National Day of Civic Hacking on June 6th, momentum has been building with new and compelling uses of open data rolling in on a weekly basis.
