She introduces readers to Demond Fortenberry, a 14-year-old resident of New Orleans who participated in a local coding event last week, where the City of New Orleans previewed four data sets related to policing. Last week, at a coding event in New Orleans, 14-year-old Demond Fortenberry blew me away with his data-savvy and curiosity. Rising ninth-grader Demond Fortenberry opened his first city data set: “Use of Force” records created by the Public Integrity Bureau at the New Orleans Police Department. As part of a three-day event engaging youth to build apps on top of soon-to-be released policing data sets, he was one of the first New Orleanians to ever see these records. With just 10 hours of coding class under his belt, Demond cautiously scrolled through the data. Horizontally and vertically. He read out the attributes as he went. Male. Male. Male. Female. Black. Black. White. White. Eight years employment on the police force. Age: 19 years. Age: 42. Taser. Canine. Handgun. As he began to get his data sea-legs, Demond talked about the patterns he noticed.

The city-parish has launched a new website called Open Budget BR to help citizens better track how their tax dollars are being spent. Mayor Kip Holden announced the launch today, saying site users will be able to find out how much funding goes to each city-parish department, as well as how each department is spending its funds. The website launch comes about five months after the city-parish rolled out Open Data BR, a website with a wide variety of public data.

No one thought about data standards when the Jack in the Box E. coli epidemic erupted in 1993. Instead, there was panic as the stomach-clenching illness engulfed more than 700 victims across California, Washington, Idaho and Nevada. The strain of bacteria, transmitted through undercooked beef patties, left more than 170 with permanent kidney and brain damage. Most of these were children, and tragically, four died as a result. For Sarah Schacht, Socrata’s Public Health Data Advisor, the national epidemic resonates in a personal way. “I’m a two-time E. coli survivor,” Schacht recalled. During the Jack in the Box outbreak, she contracted the disease at the age of 13 along with her 5-year-old brother. And in 2013, she was diagnosed yet again after dining at a Seattle restaurant.

Brendan joined the ODI as an intern for the summer of 2015. Born and raised in New York City, Brendan graduated with a BA in Politics & Social Anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. His interest in open data was sparked after witnessing its potential in disaster relief scenarios, specifically in the aftermath of the 2010 Haitian earthquake and 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Previous work experience includes stints at Endeavor Global and the Council on Foreign Relations. Brendan’s interests include keeping up with Middle Eastern politics, watching the New York Knicks, and liking to think he likes jazz.

The UK’s potential clampdown on Freedom of Information (FOI) requests makes a mockery of all the hard work that politicians, civil servants, the public and businesses have done in working towards creating the most effective open government in the world. The Cabinet Office can’t on one hand tell us that it wants open data to “go viral” in the public sector, whilst simultaneously putting plans in place that could allow policy making to happen in secret. The two can’t go hand-in-hand and the levels of hypocrisy are astounding. Recently appointed Cabinet Office Minister Matthew Hancock made a speech early last week, which outlined some genuinely groundbreaking proposals about how the UK public sector could form policies by including citizens in decision making through the use of open data.

High school students will restore and survey park trails in the coming year and use new technology to develop interactive maps of San Mateo County’s parks system. The Board of Supervisors is set to allocate more than $470,000 in two grants toward the initiative at its Tuesday meeting. The board will vote on whether to authorize County Parks Director Marlene Finley to enter into an agreement with the Student Conservation Association to provide conservation crews through next summer and a Geographic Information System (GIS) Program that will provide trail condition mapping and monitor invasive species. The Student Conservation Association is a nonprofit agency that protects and restores national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks and green spaces in all 50 states.
