HDScores founder Matthew Eierman has this mantra about letting anyone tap into the data his startup has compiled about restaurant inspections: “We don’t care where people consume our data, as long as they consume our data.” It fits, then, that the company is launching public API so developers, open-data lovers and the rest of the public can get access. It will be available for free to users up to 2,500 inspection reports a day. Then, you have to pay. The data is also available on Data.gov and Microsoft’s Azure Marketplace.

It was a simple but effective concept – and it’s put four data wizards on the national stage. Following last month’s GovHack event in Wanganui, local team Food Rate Whanganui has been named as a national finalist for the awards night in Wellington later this month. GovHack is a data competition held in cities throughout New Zealand and Australia where participants are tasked with creating smartphone apps and websites which present government data in a useful way. Food Rate Whanganui used the council’s food safety gradings to create a searchable database of all Wanganui food businesses. People can type in an outlet’s name and instantly find its council food safety rating along with customer ratings and maps.

In recent years, changes in the political landscape and the Citizens United decision have made it more important than ever to focus on how money affects the American political process. In Illinois and across the nation, there has been a dramatic increase in political spending. Many state races have reached a level once reserved only for congressional candidates. Over the past 20 years, Illinois alone has seen $2.7 billion given in campaign contributions, rising tenfold from just $31 million in 1994 to $340 million in 2014. Spending during years without elections has increased as well. Illinois hasn’t seen less than $100 million in annual political spending since 2003.

The Government of India (GOI) has adopted a comprehensive and supportive open source policy. It builds on their earlier efforts to adopt open standards for procurement. As we’ve seen in other regions, the adoption of such policies often brings out concerns from some quarters who want to spread ‘fear and doubt’ about the policy. So, what are the facts about the policy, and how does it fit into India’s broader economic development strategy? In my work with governments around the world, I’ve observed that many governments are increasing their engagement on open source to help them promote a culture of innovation that they need in order to serve their citizens today and in the years to come.

Behind the scenes at Chicago-based financial services company Northern Trust, a massive construction project is underway. Len Hardy, the bank’s chief architect, is overseeing the development of a huge information repository, capable of holding  vast quantities and varieties of data from a wide variety of systems and keeping it in native format until it’s needed for analysis. In other words, Northern Trust is building what many in the information management business have taken to calling a ‘data lake’ – but that’s not a term that Hardy likes to use. A lake, he points, out, occurs naturally.

Too many smart city visions concentrate on big data and the internet of things when there are more fundamental problems, says Tom Saunders, a senior researcher at Nesta. Take Jakarta and Beijing: “They are both currently exploring data dashboards and citywide sensing projects to address issues around traffic congestion, when what these cities really need are vastly improved public transport systems.” For Robert Muggah, research director at the Igarape Institute, leaders should come from the public sector. “Some of the standout smart cities – Barcelona, Amsterdam, Malmo – exhibited dynamic leadership from their mayors as well as chief executives,” he says.

[LONDON] Governments in developing countries must ensure the statistics they publish can be used to improve citizens’ lives, practitioners told SciDev.Net following an open data meeting Liz Carolan, the international development manager at host organisation the Open Data Institute (ODI), said countries should instead start with real-world problems and then work out how data can be part of the solution.“A government might say: ‘We put the data on the web, that’s enough’ — but it’s not,” she said. “You could not get away with that”, especially in countries where internet connectivity and literacy are low and it is difficult for people to access the data in the first place.

Alexander Howard, The Huffington Post’s senior editor of technology and society, interviewed Ania Calderón during the 3rd International Open Data Conference. Calderón, the General Director of Open Data at the Coordination of National Digital Strategy in the Office in the President of Mexico, discussed the role of open data in Mexico and the ways in which her work with open data seeks to inform better policy and foster development. Calderón begins by stating that the need for information provided by the government to the public is not new. However, the Government of Mexico’s activities in and pertaining to open data are; in fact, conversations on open data policy have been going on for just under two years.
