The Open Data Institute is working closely with the UK government departments and private sector companies to drive through a number of initiatives and promote the benefits of Open Government Data (OGD) and networking initiatives. The Institute, founded by Sirs Tim Berners-Lee and Nigel Shadbolt aims to establish the Open Data Institute (ODI) as a world-leading centre to innovate, exploit and research the opportunities for the UK created by the Government’s Open Data policy. By working with government departments and establishing open data networks and sharing, the ODI aims to help public bodies implement a number of cost-saving initiatives. The United States has already seen a number of key open data sharing initiatives which have saved the public purse significant funds.

In the past 20 years, we’ve gone from people who turn technology on and off to people who are connected to and reliant on technology 24/7, so the power consumption is continuous. Technology growth has momentum that is running unchecked, creating an invisible draw on electrical current that most do not fathom. When you do a Google search, are you picturing your request going to one of the huge data centers always there to answer the most trivial of our questions? Acres of buildings house little more than computers that are always on – generating heat and consuming electricity.

Charlotte is senior reporter at Techworld. She joined in April 2014 having previously worked as assistant editor at Government Computing. Fears that the development of artificial intelligence pose a threat to humanity are misguided, according to AI expert Sir Nigel Shadbolt. “It’s not artificial intelligence that worries me. It’s human stupidity,” Shadbolt told Techworld in an interview. Artificial intelligence is already widely used in systems to assist decision-making in medicine, insurance and finance and in consumer devices, for example Apple’s intelligent al assistant Siri, he explained. “We are a very, very long way away from self-aware or even generally intelligent computers,” he said.

ALTHOUGH the interest level in big data is on the rise, many companies wanting to embark on such a journey are making a few common mistakes.   Teradata Corp chief technology officer Stephen Brobst said that one of the biggest mistakes companies make is that they tend to put too much focus on the technology.   “It’s not just about the technology; it’s more about value creation. Big data initiatives should not be technology-led; they should be led by value creation,” he said at a roundtable discussion in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 6.   Brobst said that the term ‘big data’ can sometimes be bad for the industry.   “Sometimes, companies measure success by how many terabytes of data they can accumulate. It’s a really bad strategy.

The city of Boston continues its push towards open data and government transparency with the mayor’s announcement of an Open and Protected Data Policy. This new policy expands on the 2014 executive order on Open Data and Protected Data Sharing and encourages city agencies to publish datasets on the city’s open data portal. It also calls for more collaboration between the city and research community, encourages businesses to build innovative applications with city data, and provides guidance for responsible data-sharing practices to protect sensitive information and the data’s integrity. The policy also explains how the city will manage, catalog, analyze, classify, store, share and license the data.

Whoever said data wasn’t sexy likely didn’t see $42 million attached to it. That’s how much Bloomberg Philanthropies has committed to helping 100 mid-sized U.S. cities “enhance their use of data.” In layman’s terms, this means opening up everything from foreclosure rates and public transit performance to contract award amounts and employee headcount. The initiative, called What Works Cities, was announced in April. On Wednesday, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the first eight recipients: Chattanooga, Tennessee; Jackson, Mississippi; Kansas City, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; Mesa, Arizona; New Orleans; Seattle; and Tulsa, Oklahoma. The cities won’t receive money directly.

An independent review of the UK’s economic statistics has been launched by former Bank of England deputy governor Sir Charlie Bean. It will consider whether the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is well-placed to cope with future challenges. Chancellor George Osborne commissioned the review at the time of last month’s Budget and is expecting interim recommendations in the autumn. It is calling for submissions from users of statistics by 25 September. Sir Charlie told the BBC that he was not expecting to be able to cover all areas of the review in the interim report and that some aspects would only be included in the final report, which is scheduled to be published in time for the 2016 Budget.
