Jackson, Mississippi, and Mesa, Arizona, aim to make troves of data about city operations available online for the first time. Tulsa, Oklahoma, plans to make its data releases more useful for the public. Seattle wants to use contract data to help ensure vendors deliver on their promises. They’re among the first eight winners, announced Wednesday, in a $42 million, 100-city data-use program sponsored by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s foundation. Winners so far also include Chattanooga, Tennessee; Kansas City, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; and New Orleans. Winners of the “What Works Cities” competition get expert help to make data publicly accessible, incorporate it better into decision-making and evaluate programs.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s charitable organization has selected Louisville as one of eight cities that will receive part of a $42 million grant aimed at helping 100 midsize municipalities make better policy decisions using data and other evidence. The “What Works Cities” initiative was launched in April to help mayors across the country address local challenges with innovative partners, including Results for America, the Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University’s Government Performance Lab. You can think of a workflow system (an informal phrase I use that includes Business Process Management, or BPM) as a collection of tasks and these tasks having states: pending, started, postponed, reassigned, escalated, cancelled, completed, etc. When a task is completed, other tasks may be automatically started, assigned to users, or roles (collections of user, anyone which can complete the task). Moment-by-moment all tasks and all task states can be displayed. If you’ve never used a workflow system, you have no idea how valuable such a display is to preventing even the possibility of someone dropping the ball, so to speak, with the result of a languishing task (and an increasingly pissed-off customer).

NEW YORK (AP) – Eight cities from Jackson, Mississippi, to Seattle are the first winners in a $42 million, 100-city data-use contest sponsored by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s foundation. Bloomberg Philanthropies is announcing the first winners Wednesday in its “What Works Cities” initiative. They also include: They’ll get expert help to make data publicly accessible, incorporate it better into decision-making and evaluate programs. “What Works Cities” was announced in April. It’s open to U.S. cities of 100,000 to 1 million people. More winners will be chosen through 2017. Bloomberg Philanthropies has announced eight cities that will make up the first round of winners from the foundation’s “What Works Cities Initiative”. The $42 million initiative will choose 100 mid-sized cities to help improve their use of data-driven decision making, and provide better municipal services. The support will come in the form of expert consulting and peer-to-peer counseling. The initiative launched in April 2015. Within the first six weeks, 112 U.S. cities across 40 states applied to be a part of the program. The winning cites are Chattanooga, Tennessee; Jackson, Mississippi; Kansas City, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; Mesa, Arizona; New Orleans, Louisiana; Seattle, Washington; and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Each city has proposed its own plan.

Louisville, Ky. – Mayor Greg Fischer announced today that Louisville is one of the first cities selected to participate in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ What Works Cities – a $42 million initiative to help 100 mid-sized American cities enhance their use of data and evidence to improve the lives of residents. Louisville is one of eight cities that will receive expert on-the-ground support and peer-to-peer learning opportunities to make local government more effective. (Photo by Natalie Maynor) Bloomberg Philanthropies announced today the first eight cities chosen for What Works Cities, the organization’s new $42 million initiative to help mayors and planners make the most of big data. As I reported back in April, the goal is eventually to help 100 mid-sized U.S. cities (populations between 100,000 and one million) by boosting open gov in municipalities around the country, writing best practices guidelines and streamlining the use of data as it applies to effective policymaking. The first eight cities are Chattanooga, Tennessee; Jackson, Mississippi; Kansas City, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; Mesa, Arizona; New Orleans; Seattle; and Tulsa.
