IBM announced a set of new and enhanced services for its Bluemix Pass, including the addition of analytics capabilities and enhancements to dashDB. IBM launched a new set of services for its Bluemix Platform as a Service (PaaS) that brings enhanced analytics and data warehousing capabilities to the platform. With the new services, developers can add analytics capabilities into cloud-based applications. The new IBM Cloud tools, which include the IBM Streaming Analytics service, enable developers to integrate both data analytics and visualization in their apps. Now in open beta, the new IBM Streaming Analytics service provides the capability to analyze data, scaling to thousands of sources, on the cloud.

TORONTO – The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) joins leading grant makers worldwide by opening its grant data to drive innovation and collaboration. OTF has had a long history of releasing information of its past grants but today OTF is releasing the data in an open, raw, machine-readable format that will give community organizations, researchers and policy makers easier access for greater and more reliable cross comparisons to improve policy and innovation across the sector. OTF’s sharing of data aligns with the “Open by Default” Open Data Directive of the Government of Ontario. This will help strengthen public policy and add economic value and OTF is excited to break new ground in Canada as the first grant maker to join that movement.

The American Red Cross Information Management unit is charged with putting data in the hands of decision-makers before, during, and after major disasters in the U.S. They wondered how 5 years of past Red Cross home fire case data, smoke alarm install data, U.S. Fire Administration National Fire Incident Reporting System data, and open census data could be used to inform their efforts and predict where to target their future preparedness events at the local level. In addition to the roughly 190 home fire and other events that the Red Cross responds to everyday, they launched the  Home Fire Campaign  in October 2014 with a goal of reducing fire-related injuries and deaths in the U.S. by 25% within 5 years. On average, seven people die every day from home fires in the U.S.

Chemists must embrace open data to allow us to collectively get the best out of the masses of new knowledge we unearth, reports Clare Sansom The ‘data mountain’ in chemistry is growing ever taller. It is difficult to work out exactly how much chemical data is out there, but Ewan Birney, associate director of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) near Cambridge, UK, has estimated that the speed of data generation in the life sciences is ‘only an order of magnitude less than that from the Large Hadron Collider’. That is a lot of terabytes; much of it is chemical data, and more is closely linked to chemistry. It is enormously important – but also enormously challenging – for all chemists to be able to access and make full use of this resource.

Aimee Maree Forsstrom is an early open source advocate, who has worked in IT since 2000 building new code management practices for government and enterprise. Forsstrom is a current board member of OSIA (Open Source Industry Australia). She will be speaking at LinuxCon North America, with her talk titled Waving the open source flag in government—the highs, lows, and community code. We caught up with her, to talk about her work, bringing open source to governments. And, also, about her upcoming talk at LinuxCon, why open source code requires a community approach, and which challenges this brings. I have been working within the Sydney enterprise and government environments since I was 18.

On August 13, 2015, a shape model of Rosetta’s comet was released by ESA, along with a new interactive viewer that allows the public to explore the shape and surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. In addition, close to 7,000 images taken with Rosetta’s NAVCAM navigation camera are available for download from the ESA Archive Image Browser, and that number continues to increase with regular additions of many more as the Rosetta mission continues. Since November 2014, these images have been released under a Creative Commons license, which allows them to be shared with anyone and published anywhere, and also allows users to adapt, process and modify them.
