Wipro Ltd. has set up an open data centre in this tech hub to help enterprises adopt new age software defined infrastructure (SDI), the IT bellwether said on Monday. “As a centre of excellence the data centre integrates proprietary and open source solutions across layers, including network, storage, compute and cloud,” the software major said in a statement here.The centre also aims to transform client data centres by leveraging its adoption framework, comprising its IP (intellectual property) assets.”Our centre helps clients navigate through challenges associated with transformation of data centres. The centre of excellence will build, integrate, test and demonstrate customer aligned SDI solutions,” Wipro’s global infrastructure services chief executive G.K.

The University of Oklahoma is the recipient of a $1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the continued development of the Digital Latin Library project, which–when complete–will create resources that people of varying levels of interest and expertise in Latin can use to find, read, discuss, study, teach, edit and annotate Latin texts of all types and eras. This grant will allow OU and its collaborators to move forward on the implementation and launch of this Linked Open Data resource for providing resources and support of new scholarly educational materials related to Latin texts. “This grant is a great tribute to the leadership of our University and its faculty and staff in the fields of classics and letters,” said OU President David L. Boren.

App developers who want to mess around with some Des Moines-area transit information have a new tool. The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority recently opened up some of its data on its buses to the public. DART is providing the data in an open format, meaning anyone who wants to use the data to include in an application can do so for free. The data available includes schedule information, such as bus stops and routes, along with real-time information like vehicle positions and service alerts. DART already uses a third-party app called RideTime and in Google Maps. Opening the data to developers allows it to be used on a broader scale, DART officials said.

Data is playing an increasingly-prominent role in business as more records are made more easily available through open data portals and public APIs. Writing for DigitalGov back in April, Bill Brantley discussed the importance of government data to the US economy. Brantley references a TechRepublic interview with Ian J. Kalin, where the CDO for the Department of Commerce discussed his reliance on government data while working in the energy sector. “If we didn’t have the Census and Bureau of Labor Statistics producer price indices for certain manufactured goods, we would never have been able to build some of our most successful products,” claimed Kalin.

EPSRC and RCUK policies drive open access to research data; Salford adopts Arkivum and Figshare solution A mandate on open access to data imposed by research-funding organisations such as Research Councils UK (RCUK) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is driving higher education bodies such as universities to take steps to meet their data management requirements. The RCUK policy follows the government’s desire, on the back of its transparency and open data agenda, to ensure that published research findings should be freely accessible. EPSRC has previously set a deadline of May 2015 to have a strategy in place for long-term storage at the universities it funds.

The earthquake in Nepal in May exposed the national government’s unpreparedness to deal with the aftermath of a huge natural disaster, but it also gave rise to a movement of young Nepalese people with the skills required to help their country in its hour of need. A group of educated, tech-savvy men and women launched Quakemap.org, a website that made up for the shortfall in official information in the immediate aftermath of the quake. Quakemap.org invited people to report earthquake damage in real-time and list what kind of aid was required around the country. For example: someone in contact with, or living in, an affected community might mark on the map that 50 tents were needed in a certain district.
