When I was an urban planning student at the University of California, Los Angeles, more than 30 years ago, my area of concentration was known as the “built environment” — the bricks and mortar, the form and design of the buildings, the streets, the sidewalks, the parks and everything else that makes up the way humans have manipulated the environment to create built spaces. The course of study led me to think that cities are pretty static: Buildings, roads and other structures are expensive and time-consuming to build, and they don’t change much over time. In New Orleans, community policing initiatives require trust and accountability between at-risk youth and police officers. To support these efforts, the New Orleans Police Department and Operation Spark, a community-based non-profit organization, hosted Summerware, a three-day workshop to make good use of police open data. Summerware brought together New Orleans Police Department officials with intimate knowledge of policing practices and 15 young technologists from Operation Spark learning new skills. Together these groups verified the accuracy of policing data, reducing duplicate records and misspellings, before the data were published on the City’s Socrata open data portal.

In this special guest feature, Neil Chue Hong (Software Sustainability Institute), Simon Hettrick (Software Sustainability Institute), Andrew Jones (@hpcnotes & NAG), and Daniel S. Katz (University of Chicago & Argonne National Laboratory) discuss the the role of open source software in publicly funded research. In their recent paper, Krylov et al. [1] state that the goal of the research community is to advance “what is good for scientific discovery.” We wholeheartedly agree. We also welcome the debate on the role of open source in research, begun by Gezelter [2], in which Krylov was participating. However, we have several concerns with Krylov’s arguments and reasoning on the best way to advance scientific discovery with respect to research software.

Companies must do more to inform consumers about the way their information is being shared, the UK’s Information Commissioner Christopher Graham has urged. His comments follow a new survey highlighting consumers’ concerns about how their personal information is being shared. According to the survey, which involved interviews with 1,575 individuals, as much as 85% of people are concerned about how their personal information is passed or sold to other organisations. Another 77% of people are concerned about organisations not keeping their personal details secure, the study found – which was undertaken on behalf of the ICO by research firm ComRes. “Providing people with enough information to understand how their details will be used is a basic principle of data protection,” said Graham.

People have been using Yelp to find hotels and restaurants for years. Now, they can make more informed decisions about hospitals, nursing homes and dialysis centers, too. As part of a new consumer protection initiative, government health data has become integrated into the Yelp review pages for all of these facilities. To pull this off, Yelp is collaborating with the award-winning nonprofit news organization ProPublica to show you which health care facilities are safe, fast and well-run. Yelp already had user reviews on all of these facilities, as well as huge amounts of data on which bike stores and bookshops and car-battery suppliers its users prefer. Now, ProPublica is providing Yelp with cleaned-up data originally released by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
