Behind the success of the new wave of location based mobile apps taking hold around the world is digital mapping. Location data is core to popular ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft, but also to companies such as Amazon or Domino’s Pizza, which are testing drones for faster deliveries. Last year, German delivery firm DHL launched its first “parcelcopter” to send medication to the island of Juist in the Northern Sea. In the humanitarian domain, drones are also being tested for disaster relief operations. Better maps can help app-led companies gain a competitive edge, but it’s hard to produce them at a global scale. A few select players have engaged in a fierce mapping competition. Google leads the race so far, but others are trying to catch up fast.

Today the California Department of Justice launched a new website that publishes data about police interactions with the public, including the number of people who die at the hands of police. Called Open Justice, the initiative is being billed as the first of its kind to provide detailed data to the public on a variety of crime statistics, including the number of officers killed and assaulted while on duty. The California DOJ says that the effort is a step towards more transparency amidst America’s ongoing debate about citizens dying both in police custody and by cops on the street. Open Justice has two components: the first being the more public-facing website called Dashboard which includes graphs and more easily digestible stats.

The federal government has finalized more than four dozen data standards that agencies will use to more consistently report federal spending information. The new data standards — a key part of the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act, or DATA Act — also aim to make it easier for the public and good-government groups to track federal dollars. The Office of Management and Budget and the Treasury Department first introduced standardized definitions for 57 different data elements as part of preliminary guidance issued to agencies in May. Mumbai and US-based data analytics firm Infinite Analytics has raised an undisclosed round of funding from Ratan Tata to expand its predictive analytics technology to segments beyond retail and ecommerce. Existing investors like Nikhil Vora of Sixth Sense Ventures and new investors from Silicon Valley and India have also participated in this round. The company was born in an Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) class of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web. Since its inception in 2012, Infinite Analytics has raised a seed round from various investors across the globe in Australia, Taiwan, India, UK and the USA. It is also backed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Deb Roy, Chief Media Scientist at Twitter, who are advisors and investors in the company.

However, to imagine that Africa is awash with data and information would be simplistic and fallacious. Huge data challenges persist in our part of the world. For example, we don’t know how many children are stunted or suffer from chronic malnutrition. We don’t have accurate information on the number of children enrolled in school or out of school. We don’t really know how many young people are unemployed. We don’t know what skills our economy needs. We don’t have data on the number of Kenyans who don’t have access to water and sanitation. We don’t know how many people are killed on our perilous roads every year.
