When data enters conversation many of us switch off but in the hands of Stefanie Posavec data is an artistic medium. The creative innovator talks to us about how she transforms stale, immaterial matter into exciting works of art. She takes figures relating to anything from cabinet office spending to the ozone layer and turns them into highly visual and engaging installations. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2004, with an MA in Communication Design, Posavec shifted her focus from book design and text visualization towards a more immersive and experiential dimension. She uses an analogue approach to data manipulation that makes patterns normally hidden in a seamless digital world tangible.

The only constant is that journalism has to re-invent itself. With technological outlets oozing into everyday culture, the way we get what’s happening out in the real-world is changing and it appears the new word on the streets is Data Journalism. Data is king, and we have become like machines who only acknowledge the values of numbers and statistics. More data; less social science based investigations and storytelling, towards data collecting, analysis and publishing based on code, algorithms and software from the computer sciences? Don’t worry just yet journalism is still all about storytelling, but the stories are being told from newer more scientifically integrated methods. Start-ups are most definitely trying to create a market position for data journalism.

Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe both reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon this year and possess some of the same tools that have propelled Serena Williams to the top of the game. Serena, Keys and Vandeweghe all rank in the top 10 in all of the most important serving categories on the WTA Tour: aces, first serve points won, second serve points won and service games won. Take a look at the stats: The one area where they don’t come close to measuring up to Serena is return of serve. For 2015, Serena has won 45% of her return games (5th best on Tour). Keys has won just 34% and Vandeweghe just 24% of her return games. Most women on tour struggle with their serves against the strong groundstrokes and returns that are the norm on the WTA Tour.

From the first state CDO appointed in Colorado five years ago, to California’s recent push to create the position in their state, hiring a CDO is what all the cool states are doing. “We are aware of the recent trend of some organizations creating Chief Data Officers,” writes Mike Hojnicki, Chief of Policy & Communications at the state Department of Technology & Information. “To date, Delaware’s Government Information Center and the Department of Technology and Information have partnered to foster sharing of information among government agencies, and increase the amount and usefulness of information made available to the public.

Jackson, Mississippi is launching an open data policy according to an executive order signed this morning by Mayor Tony T. Yarber. The policy is notable as Jackson was included as one of the first round winners in the “What Works Cities Initiative,” sponsored by the Bloomberg Philanthropies. The $42 million initiative will choose 100 mid-sized cities to help improve their use of data-driven decision making, and provide better municipal services. The support will come in the form of expert consulting and peer-to-peer counseling. “Jackson will codify and standardize open data processes and policies to share data openly with residents, as well as internally,” said Jackson Mayor Tony T. Yarber in a statement.

Mayor Tony Yarber is opening up. Specifically, his administration is developing an open-data policy for the City of Jackson. This week, he signed an executive order to “codify and standardize open-data processes and policies to share data openly with residents, as well as internally.” In laymen’s terms, the City will create a portal within its existing website to make public information more readily available.
