Earlier this month, the Delaware Department of State’s Deputy Principal Assistant Dana Rohrbough Garber wrote a letter to Delaware urging the state’s technology communities to begin building a civic tech community. “Delaware is currently publishing thousands of reports, and we are getting better at releasing data in raw formats,” Garber wrote. “Fostering a civic tech community is not just about datasets, though.” Ain’t that the truth. Once data is published, it needs to be put to use. So, we asked two civic-minded Delawareans — David Curtis, an urbanist and consultant, and Patrick Callahan, founder of Compass Red and all-around data nut — to come up with a quick wish list of data-centric projects they’d like to see built using state or city data.

The applications of big data continue to be an ongoing transformative force across a number of industries, including telecom. RCR rounds up some of the 2015 predictions and recent reports that give insight into the latest trends and areas of movement and focus in big data. 1. IDC has said that big data is part of its so-called Third Platform consisting of cloud, mobile, social, big data, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and that this year will mark a shift to the “innovation stage” with an “explosion of innovation and value creation on top of the 3rd Platform’s foundation.” IDC’s predictions for big data in 2015 include a total market for software, hardware and services growing to $125 billion.

The average age of the top 200 players on the ATP World Tour is 27 years 4 months, the top 20 average is 28 years 5 months.  Below is a comparison of the ages by ranking: It’s amazing to see how many of the top players are close to or over 30 years of age and how few teenagers are in the world’s top 200.  Things have sure changed from the days of teenage champions like Mats Wilander, Boris Becker, Michael Chang and Pete Sampras.  In today’s game it takes a long time for players to rise to the top. The Analytical Center experts have looked at the information published on the Russia’s open data portal and found that data are being published slowly, little attention is being paid to relevance and the topics are quite unbalanced. Russia launched its open data portal in 2013 and for the past 2 years Russia has been consistently approaching the level of data transparency of G7 countries where national open data portals were created a long time ago and function successfully today. The portal has been growing steadily and at a fairly fast pace as well: in 2014 the amount of data sets available through the portal went up by 72.34% and in 2015 so far it has gone up 46.2%.

Mayor Tony Yarber has signed an executive order on open data as the first step in the City’s commitment to establish an open data policy and make key city data sets available to the public. The city says that establishing an open data policy and practice is a critical part of Jackson’s work with What Works Cities, the Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded national initiative launched in April 2015 to enhance cities’ use of data and evidence to improve residents’ lives. “Jackson will codify and standardize open data processes and policies to share data openly with residents, as well as internally,” said Jackson Mayor Tony T.  Yarber. “We’ll ensure staff across city departments understand the purpose of data collection, regularly collect and publish data, and make decisions based on such data.

Over the past few months, we’ve been covering the controversy over how much data California utilities need to share in their distribution resource plans (DRPs) — the regulatory framework that could open a multi-billion-dollar market for distributed energy resources to support the state’s grid. July’s DRP filings by Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric opened up some important data to third parties and customers. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The City of Jackson is a step closer to establishing an open data policy and make key data available to the public. Mayor Tony T. Yarber on Tuesday signed an executive order setting up the policy. In a news release, the city says establishing such a policy is a critical part of Jackson’s work with “What Works Cities,” the Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded national initiative launched in April to enhance cities’ use of data to improve residents’ lives. Jackson will work with the Sunlight Foundation and The Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University to help it make data available to the public in a more useful and responsive way. Jackson was one of eight cities that won the competition to get the help. More winners will be chosen through 2017.
