JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The City of Jackson is a step closer to establishing an open data policy and make key data available to the public. Mayor Tony T. Yarber on Tuesday signed an executive order setting up the policy. In a news release, the city says establishing such a policy is a critical part of Jackson’s work with “What Works Cities,” the Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded national initiative launched in April to enhance cities’ use of data to improve residents’ lives. Jackson will work with the Sunlight Foundation and The Center for Government Excellence at Johns Hopkins University to help it make data available to the public in a more useful and responsive way. Jackson was one of eight cities that won the competition to get the help. More winners will be chosen through 2017.
