Pickering Interfaces is expanding its range of PXI Fault Insertion switch modules with two cards designed for use with differential serial interfaces. The first differential PXI module (model 40-200) is designed for lower data rate serial interfaces such as CAN and FlexRay. A higher bandwidth switch module (model 40-201) is designed for higher data rate serial interfaces such as AFDX and 1000BaseT Ethernet. The modules can be used to provide fault connections that include data paths open, data paths shorted together, and data paths shorted to externally applied faults such as power supplies and ground. The software driver defaults to a protective mode where conflicting faults are prevented to avoid accidentally shorting unintended paths, such as power to ground.

When told that his small Prairie town had, in profound ways, fallen off the statistical map of Canada, Walter Streelasky, mayor of Melville, Sask., is incredulous. Streelasky had no idea Melville had been rendered a “statistical ghost town” after the mandatory long-form census was cut in 2010, and fewer than 50 per cent of Melville’s 4,500 residents completed the voluntary National Household Survey that replaced it in the 2011 census. Melville still exists—but as a shadow. We know how many people live there, but nothing about them—where they work, their education levels, whether they’re married, single or divorced, how many are immigrants, how many are unemployed, how many live in poverty.

NPR’s “The Takeaway” program recently examined the “The Biggest Challenges Facing America and the World.” The episode included an interview with USDA Chief Scientist and Undersecretary Catherine Woteki on the challenge of being able to feed a world population that is estimated to reach more than 9 billion people by the year 2050. On behalf of USDA, Dr. Woteki played a key role in the formation of Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN), an international organization which supports efforts to make agricultural and nutritional data available, accessible, and usable for unrestricted use worldwide. She said harvesting such data could be a key to harvesting enough future crops to meet future challenges.

Pittsburgh is plotting a course for its IT future with a new “Roadmap for Inclusive Innovation,” released earlier this month. After more than a year of drafting and discussion, the city’s Department of Innovation and Performance published the the new initiative on a standalone website to lay out the city’s plans for IT innovation over the coming months and years. In particular, the roadmap lays out six broad goals for the city: address the digital divide, empower city-to-citizen engagement, provide open data, improve internal operations and capacity, advance the clean technology sector and promote the local business environment.

This Week in Civic Tech presents a lineup of notable events in the space that connects citizens to government services. Topics cover latest startups, hackathons, open data initiatives and other influencers. Check back each week for updates. Anyone who’s been trapped in a slow-moving subway car or has missed a connecting train knows the frustration that goes along with those experiences. Passengers ask what the holdup is, which is followed by more questions that propose possible information-sharing solutions — for example, “Why wasn’t I notified trains would be late, or about the construction?” The improvisational analysis is something the Santa Clara Valley Transit Authority (VTA) hopes to harness in a transit-based hackathon that wraps up in October. It’s no secret that our government is using big data technologies to track and monitor the activities of regular citizens, ostensibly to protect our freedom. But data analytics can also be used to keep track of what our government is doing—or at least what the politicians and other lawmakers are up to. The advent of open data initiatives at all levels of government is giving citizens, companies, and other interested parties access to vast amounts of data generated by various agencies and governmental bodies. This tidal wave of open data will help people generate new insights in a variety of areas, from medical science to social demographic research.

The Web tool allows users to see how many patents a company owns or what areas of technology have a growing body of intellectual property. Before coming to FedScoop, she was a reporter and copy editor at E&E Publishing, an… The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office debuted a new tool that makes it easier for the public to explore the agency’s patents archive. In a post on its news blog Thursday, the Commerce Department announced the launch of PatentsView, which lets users browse 40 years of patent data by title, name of inventor and a host of other attributes. The tool also can illustrate search results using charts and maps.

Former Seattle Chief Technology Officer and 30-year public-sector veteran Bill Schrier has joined the Seattle Police Department (SPD) as interim CIO, filling in for Greg Russell, a former Amazon executive who began in March of this year and abruptly quit earlier this month to head back to the private sector. Schrier will lead programs like the department’s body camera and video redaction program, a mobile policing strategy, and an evolving open data policy. Rather than go through another extensive, months-long hiring process for its newly created CIO position, SPD grabbed Schrier to execute the plan that Russell established, the veteran explained.

Telstra Health has appointed NHS England’s national director for patients and information Tim Kelsey as its new commercial director, based in Melbourne. Mr Kelsey, a former Sunday Times news editor who co-founded healthcare analytics firm Dr Foster with fellow journalist Roger Taylor in 1999 and began publishing the annual Good Hospital Guide in 2001, is also the architect of the controversial care.data program, which aims to collect patient data from GP medical records. Long an advocate for open data and transparency in the healthcare system, he was CEO of Dr Foster until 2007, when the NHS bought a half share in the company. Dr Foster was bought by Telstra Health in 2015, having previously had an exclusive licence to its risk-adjusted quality measurement tool.
