The NSW government has added sales history data for residential properties to its NSW Globe project and will release the data in an open format for use by third parties. NSW Globe was launched last year by state government agency Lands and Property Information. The project allows government datasets to be overlaid on Google Earth. NSW Globe includes medium and high resolution aerial and satellite imagery from government and private sources, terrain data, historic images, boundary information, including suburbs and electorate information, roads and rail routes, and addresses. “Today we are meeting our election commitment to make sales data available for free and in an open format by the end of October 2015,” the state’s finance minister, Dominic Perrottet, said in a statement.

Residential sales history data now available free of charge as part of a NSW Government reform package Residential sales history data is now available free of charge as part of a NSW Government reform package. This reform package aims to bring property information services into the digital age. Minister for finance, services and property, Dominic Perrottet, said the sales history data held by Lands and Property Information (LPI) will be available on the NSW Globe application, which harnesses Google Earth technology. “We are meeting our election commitment to make sales data available for free and in an open format by the end of October 2015,” Perrottet said.

In the last of the the Future of London series, presented by Transport for London, we talk to Shashi Verma, the transport authority’s Director of Customer Experience, about big data and new methods of payment. When you picture a large public sector organisation you wouldn’t necessarily think it would be a leader in innovation – or that it would be in partnership with one of the most well regarded tech universities in the world. But Transport for London (TfL) has been making major strides with open data initiatives and the use of technology for a long time. TfL has been a “data-driven organisation” for more than 40 years, according to Shashi Verma, the transport authority’s Director of Customer Experience.

Real estate is already an unhealthy obsession in Sydney, and now the state government is throwing fuel on the flames. On Friday, NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property, Dominic Perrottet, announced that 14 years worth of New South Wales property sales data would be accessible for free on a digital mapping service called NSW Globe. In all seriousness — the availability of this kind of information, typically a huge bother to access, is a very welcome move towards open data in local government. “Until now, people had to pay the government or a third party provider to access property sales data,” Mr Perrottet said in a statement.

NHS England’s Tim Kelsey is stepping down from his role as national director for patients and information to take up post as commercial director at Australian health company Telstra Health. Kelsey – who will leave his role in December – joined NHS England in 2012 after a stint as executive director of transparency and open data at the Cabinet Office. Since then, Kelsey has been responsible for the organisation’s data strategy, heading up the ambitious care.data programme, which aims to improve health outcomes by connecting GP data with hospital admissions and other patient information. Tim Kelsey has resigned from his post as national director for patients and information at NHS England to take up a new role in the private sector. His departure comes as the controversial care.data plan to share patient details between GP surgeries hit more rocky ground this month, with health secretary Jeremy Hunt hitting the pause button on pilot trials across the country, ordering the NHS to come up with a new opt-out scheme for patients. Kelsey joined NHS England in 2012, following one year spent as executive director of transparency and open data at the Cabinet Office’s efficiency and reform group after helping to set up NHS Choices, the health service information website, in 2006. He is most associated with the controversial care.

The key, as I have highlighted before, is to invest in building innovative data systems that draw on new sources of real-time data for sustainable development. We live in a data-driven world. Advertisers, insurance companies, national security agencies, and political advisers have already learned to tap into big data, sometimes to our chagrin; so, too, have countless scientists and researchers, thereby accelerating progress on new discoveries.

One positive outcome derived from the formulation process of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a global consensus for better data in different spheres of life and society. From policymakers to implementing bodies, all have agreed that updated and authentic data are crucial for development planning. That’s why, when the leaders of 195 member countries of the United Nations (UN) will formally adopt the SDGs at the end of this month, they will put strong emphasis on quality data. It is also critical to track the progress of the much hyped SDGs in the next 15 years. In fact, the 70th UN General Assembly meeting, to be held on September 25-27 this year, is going to be memorable for the adoption of the SDGs.

London-based tech startup Figshare has a pretty incredible mandate – use technology to completely overhaul how academic research is available. In turn, it hopes this will better society by speeding up scientific, economic, and sociological discovery. Effectively, Figshare wants to accelerate the pace of discoveries like a cure for cancer through its platform. It’s completely disrupting the academic world at the moment and some of the world’s largest drugmakers are in talks to licence its open data platform. It’s basically a mixture of “DropBox on the back end and YouTube on the front end”, according to founder Mark Hahnel. Even the least tech savvy academic is able to use it. It was founded in 2011 by Hahnel while he was studying for a PhD in stem cell biology.
