There is growing recognition that the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will be adopted on Friday at a special United Nations summit, will depend on the ability of governments, businesses and civil society to harness data for decision-making. The key is to invest in building innovative data systems that draw on new sources of real-time data for sustainable development. We live in a data-driven world. Advertisers, insurance companies, national security agencies and political advisers have already learned to tap into big data, sometimes to our chagrin; so, too, have countless scientists and researchers, thereby accelerating progress on new discoveries.

The gap between the city’s cost estimates and what contractors bid to fix sidewalks, sewage pipes and roads dropped to roughly two per cent in 2014, according to new figures compiled by the city released to the public Monday and available for all to see for the first time on its open data website. Up to 2012, city bureaucrats and councillors relied on “historical figures” to estimate the cost of city contracts it put out to tender in order to gauge whether they were getting a fair price. Testimony from the Charbonneau Commission into corruption in the province’s construction industry suggested those figures were highly elevated because contractors had been colluding for years to inflate prices on city contracts by as much as 30 per cent.

The scorecard is not without controversy: as with any rankings system, questions over the quality of data come into play, and creating a single rating system for colleges with such variety in missions and resources is undeniably hard . The White House has launched a redesigned College Scorecard website, which can help “students and parents identify which schools provide the biggest bang for your buck”, according to a press release. The numbers were especially troubling at barber academies, cosmetology schools, and for-profit colleges. The White House said around 2 million college students who are eligible for Pell Grant doesn’t apply for the aid.

After a notable few months that has seen its scale ramp-up massively, AOL is now heralding itself as one of the largest players in the automated advertising market, with ‘openness’ as its key distinction when compared to the likes of Facebook and Google. The Drum caught up with AOL president Bob Lord at this week’s Dmexco to find out more about how the proposition will roll out, and also gets his take on the ‘open’ vs. ‘closed’ debate, where he draws reference to one of the most famous adages in the history of the advertising industry. AOL has gone through an eventful few months, firstly with its $4.4bn purchase by US mobile operator Verizon Wireless, followed by its partnership with Microsoft, which effectively saw the latter hand over the keys to its advertising operations to AOL.

How Canada’s Tories destroyed the country’s memory, and its capacity to remember The Canadian Conservative government’s war on science, statistics and evidence have been a great boon to its ability to create policy that helps its friends and destroys the country, but the deep and arbitrary cuts to science and statistics have eroded Canada’s ability to know what is happening in the country to a terrifying extent. Even as other countries are moving to “open data” as a matter of course in government policy, Canada has embraced a deepening, suspicious secrecy. Data that used to be open is gone — but ministers like the outgoing Tony Clement praise the openness of government with a straight face.
