President Barack Obama presented an updated College Scorecard, a system that informs prospective students about college affordability and graduate workforce participation, with Georgetown displaying above-average rates in these major categories, during his weekly address to the country Sept. 12. The updated scorecards, revealed on the Department of Education’s website, include information about the earnings, debt and loan payments of each school’s graduates. The first scorecard system was announced in President Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address. The College Scorecard website presents a general overview of each university’s statistics, ranging from SAT scores to retention rates. Data from more than 7,000 colleges was analyzed for the new database.

Casey works her tail off. Every month she works incredibly hard pulling together a bunch of data from multiple departments. She carefully checks and double checks the numbers. She then summarizes them into tables and a few charts. (She would love to be able to map them but just doesn’t know how). When she’s all done, she emails the table and charts to her supervisor to file the official report. Sometimes, they end up being posted to the website where they can be downloaded. Next month, it starts all over. Let’s imagine Casey in a world where open data addressed her endless reporting problem: Now you might be thinking – golly, Casey, you can do this now! Technically and in the most narrow sense, you may be right.

Tim Kelsey’s legacy to the NHS isn’t just the botched care.data project. He’s also been pushing a vision of digital salvation, that his new firm is already starting to benefit from. Tim Kelsey, the NHS’s man for all things data and digital, has had it in the neck a lot recently. Could this be why he is off to Australia to work for telecommunications giant, Telstra (more on them below)? As the driving force behind the expensive, error-strewn care.data programme, Kelsey was always going to be a controversial figure. People are rightly concerned that this vast database of all our medical records, which was sold as benefitting the health service, would also be of huge commercial value to pharmaceutical companies, private health insurers and others.

After transforming Open North from an idea to an organization over the last four years, I stepped down as executive director earlier this month. The seed of this decision was likely sown a year and a half ago, when I started thinking about Open North’s path and mine. In the beginning, Open North’s reputation, direction, and interests were dominated by my own. When Stéphane Guidoin joined a year later, Open North operated more as a partnership than as a company, with each of us generating business and delivering projects more or less independently: Stéphane ran Open511, JeVeuxSavoir, and CKAN consulting, and I ran Citizen Budget, Represent API, and Popolo.

Not sure if you’ve heard, but Hallandale Beach wants you to know the city is getting ready to bare it all—”it” being the city government’s financials. Yes, Hallandale Beach residents will soon be able to see exactly where government money is being spent, and how that changes every month. On Oct. 1, Hallandale Beach is launching its OpenGov webpage, which provides quick and easy charts that break down the city budget. The City of Hallandale Beach website—cohb.org—will feature a button that takes visitors to the continually updated, open data dashboard. Larger cities like Fort Lauderdale and Miami already use OpenGov, and smaller Broward cities like Tamarac and Oakland Park have invested in it as well.

CLEVELAND–As molecular-level electronic, photonic and biological devices grow smaller, approaching the nanometer scale, chemists, physicists and materials scientists strive to predict the magnitude of the fundamental intermolecular interactions, and whether new hierarchical combinations of these material components will assemble and function as designed. Scientists at Case Western Reserve University and collaborators at University of Massachusetts-Amherst and University of Missouri-Kansas City, unveil Gecko Hamaker, an open-source computational and modeling tool with a full-spectral optical web-service, highlighted on the cover of today’s issue of the American Chemical Society’s journal Langmuir.

IBM provided updates to its new initiatives at its business analytics conference on September 16th. The company focused primarily on its progress in such projects as OpenPOWER, IBM Analytics, and spent time explaining the paradigm shift from data storage to real-time actionable analytics. There is a myriad of software firms who are vying for market share in analytics services. Microsoft built its platform around Azure, with software tools run on SQL Server, Excel, and SharePoint. IBM thinks the demand from industries is in the midst of moving from data storage and ad hoc reporting to real-time analysis. It cited Pratt and Whitney, a manufacturing company for the aerospace industry, as one of its customers.
