Now, city of Waco officials hope to use some expert help to join the “open data” bandwagon, using new databases both for internal improvements and public accountability. Mayor Malcolm Duncan Jr. said the process may take several years to mature, but he hopes it will “change the culture” of City Hall to be data-driven. “It’s being able to take the data we have and the measures of performance we have, and … more closely align the work of government with the demands of what citizens would like us to do,” Duncan told the Waco City Council last week.

Advertisers, insurance companies, national security agencies, and political advisers have already learned to tap into big data, sometimes to our chagrin; so, too, have countless scientists and researchers, thereby accelerating progress on new discoveries.

It’s been a busy year for AOL. The headline, of course, is its own $4.4 billion acquisition by Verizon. But there’s also a series of acquisitions AOL itself has made that have helped make it a key player in advertising technology: Video marketplace Adap.tv, attribution firm Convertro, native ad platform Gravity, video exchange Vidible, and mobile ad network Millennial Media. There’s also the deal to take over the sale of Microsoft’s digital media inventory. Now, AOL is homing in on creative, an area its president Bob Lord believes is woefully underserved in ad tech. Digiday caught up with Lord at global ad tech conference Dmexco in Cologne last week, where he outlined why creativity is the next frontier of ad tech and how his “open data” strategy will bolster its competitive advantage.

Online data provided free of charge by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is proving critical to the success of businesses across New Zealand, Land Information Minister Louise Upston says. “LINZ’s Data Service has more than 19,000 users, and a recent customer survey found more than half of those surveyed rely on its data. A further 20 per cent reported the service’s data is critical to the success of their business,” Ms Upston says. Data available through the LINZ Data Service includes map and chart information, as well as surveyed boundaries and property titles. Aerial imagery covering 95 percent of New Zealand also forms part of the service.

Residential sales history data is now available free of charge as part of a NSW Government reform package. This reform package aims to bring property information services into the digital age. Minister for finance, services and property, Dominic Perrottet, said the sales history data held by Lands and Property Information (LPI) will be available on the NSW Globe application, which harnesses Google Earth technology. “We are meeting our election commitment to make sales data available for free and in an open format by the end of October 2015,” Perrottet said.

Hudson Hollister is the founder and executive director of the Data Transparency Coalition, which advocates on behalf of the private sector and the public interest for the publication of standardized, machine-readable government information. The scale of U.S. federal government spending is immense, overwhelming and abstract. At 20 percent of American Gross Domestic Product, our $3.8 trillion in annual federal spending is larger than the entire economies of all but two countries. This large budget spanning hundreds of agencies and departments presents a considerable challenge to open review of public spending. It wasn’t meant to be this way.
