In Louisville, Kentucky, you can see employee salaries and overtime pay, building inspection reports, information on impounded animals, EMS response times and sidewalk conditions. Now, city of Waco officials hope to use some expert help to join the “open data” bandwagon, using new databases both for internal improvements and public accountability. Mayor Malcolm Duncan Jr. said the process may take several years to mature, but he hopes it will “change the culture” of City Hall to be data-driven. “It’s being able to take the data we have and the measures of performance we have, and … more closely align the work of government with the demands of what citizens would like us to do,” Duncan told the Waco City Council last week.
