British Airways (BA) will use a private cloud data center and IP/MPLS core backbone from Juniper Networks technology, that will applications including ticketing, check-in and baggage tracking. The airline picked Juniper’s MetaFabric open data center architecture for an upgrade it needed to support new flight management and customer management sysatems. The deal includes Juniper’s QFabric system and EX series Ethernet switches, and was announced at a Juniper press and analyst day in London, along with a new cloud reference architecture called Unite. BA is using MX Series 3D edge routers and EX Series Ethernet switches, with MX480 routers in the core, and EX9200 switches at the edge.

“We woke up at 7:15 on a Saturday and there was a young man peering in the window,” said Joan Gamble of Rutland. Gamble and her husband were startled to find someone looking through their bedroom window. The suspect then ran around the back of their house and made his way to a neighbor’s, where he was caught by police. Gamble has lived in Rutland for 26 years. It’s not the first time she’s needed to call police. And says each time she’s been grateful for the response. “It was all very fast and efficient,” she said. In this recent case, the suspect was arrested without much of a struggle, but the situation could have been different. “Every time an officer has to use force in response to an incident, they have to file a report,” Rutland City Police Chief David Covell said.

VC4Africa, the online community for African entrepreneurs and investors, has made its database of startups that are registered on the VC4Africa platform, available to the public. The database can be accessed via an API (application programming interface) which will automatically embed public venture data from the platform on external websites. As a custodian of a large volume of entrepreneurial activity on the continent, VC4Africa is in a unique position to crowdsource primary data on the African venture space. “We’ve had requests in the past from members who wanted to embed our ventures map on an external website, or display a subset of our venture data that was relevant to their context. Conferences come and go, but Apache: Big Data Europe and its sister event ApacheCon Core Europe 2015 is kind of special… as it’s a pure thoroughbred user conference. As already reported on the Computer Weekly Open Source Insider blog, this event is dedicated to the vendor-neutral work of the Apache Foundation and its focus on products that power petabytes of data, teraflops of operations and billions of objects. Employees at Arlington’s Transportation, Engineering & Operations Bureau spend their days parked in front of monitors, scanning the screens as cars idle at stoplights and creep along in traffic. Now this riveting experience can be yours, too. As part of an open data initiative, Arlington County is making the feeds from 180 traffic cameras publicly accessible. They can be watched, one at a time, on the county website. The feed cuts out after a minute to keep the bandwidth down but can be refreshed. “This new service is part of the County’s initiative to promote open data and better serve all those who use Arlington streets,” said Dennis Leach, director of Arlington County’s transportation division.

The American Medical Association (AMA) held another town hall meeting to discuss the challenges of the Meaningful Use (MU) program as part of its Break the Red Tape campaign. The event gave numerous clinicians the opportunity to share their experiences—good and bad—with health IT. MU has been successful by measure of adoption, said AMA President Steven Stack, MD. But, “less successful in spurring the innovation and the efficiency we want it and need it to have.” Health IT should help physicians be more efficient, help patients get better coordinated care rather than more fragmented, eliminate data silos and establish one large ecosystem all for the betterment of patient care. “We’re not there yet.
