Doing experiments isn’t just for the birds, and it’s not just for the professional scientists, either. Long before anyone ever thought of “crowdsourcing” or “open innovation,” thousands of volunteers were stumping around in the snow and sleet every year for the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count, helping to assess the status and health of bird populations across the United States by collecting data and donating their observations to the scientific community. This sort of activity is called “citizen science,” and it simply involves members of the public using the scientific method to explore the mysteries of the natural world and advance our understanding of it.

Intralinks will be working with Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Canberra Datacentre (CDC) to build its first Australian datacentre as part of the company’s expansion in the region. The datacentre, expected to be launched in 2016, will feature the HP Helion OpenStack Platform and will be stood up in the CDC facility. Speaking to ZDNet, Ron Hovsepian, Intralinks president, CEO, and director, said the company recognised there was a strong demand in the Australian market for software-as-a-service enterprise solution. “The good news is the IT spending in the Australian market has been very strong. So from an impact perspective, [the datacentre] will play a really nice growth role for us within the Asia region.

The opposition party in the UK government, the Labour party, has made a couple of announcements of late that have got me thinking about policy making in this country. In particular, how digital technologies, a networked economy and a platform-enabled government could be used to better create policy that is informed and representative of the people’s needs. Firstly, Labour’s new leader Jeremy Corbyn has said that he would like to change how policy is created and let members of the party have more of a say in future policy direction. Secondly, whilst not directly related to policy, Corbyn and his team used crowdsourcing/digital techniques to form the basis for questions during his first Prime Minister’s Questions. It appears that Labour is wanting to become a party that is more open.

Today’s the first day of Strata + Hadoop World at New York City’s Jacob Javits Convention Center, and a slew of announcements are crossing the wire this morning. Security at the source Here’s a big one: BlueTalon has announced technology implementing fine-grained security (filtering and data masking) right at the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS)-level. I haven’t been briefed on this technology so I don’t know exactly how it works, but the aim is clear: implement access controls on data at the file system-level so that the security controls propagate through to all Hadoop services which may attempt to read the data. How this reconciles with other security schemes — some of them still emerging — like Apache Sentry and Apache Ranger, is unclear.

Carrier neutral service provider New Jersey Fiber Exchange (NJFX) is opening a data center on the New Jersey coast, which links directly with undersea cables to Europe and South America. Due to open in 2016, NJFX’s Tier 3 data center will have an express connection to undersea cables operated by India-based service provider Tata Communications, providing high speed access between the US, Europe, and South America with no recurring interconnect charges for worldwide access. The facility is expected to be carrier-neutral and will also offer dark fiber at customer request. The planned, 64,000 sq ft (6000 sq m) data center will complement the carrier-neutral Meet Me Room (MMR) that NJFX is already launching within the Tata’s Wall, NJ cable landing station.

It’s probably coincidence that Hadoop pioneer Cloudera and the Linux Foundation each announced Hadoop-related news that isn’t necessarily complementary, on the same day. But then again, the Strata + Hadoop World is taking over much of the Javits Center in New York City today through Thursday, so if you’ve got something big to say, there are plenty of open, interested ears to hear it. So it goes to follow that yesterday Hadoop pioneer Cloudera made big news around Kudu, a new columnar store for Hadoop that enables the combination of fast analytics on fast data. It could, in time, prove disruptive (in a good way) to enterprises using Apache Hadoop, giving them a competitive advantage.

“It may be an idea too hot to handle for some groups wedded to IP,” says Jaykumar Menon, explaining the creation of the Open Source Pharma Foundation. Taking a “disruptive” approach to public health, the OSPF seeks to be a “Linux (platform) for drugs”. The Foundation will make data open and public at all stages of the drug development cycle, from early research leads during discovery, through to clinical trials on humans and the final generic manufacturing, Menon told BusinessLine, speaking from the US. The idea is to bring out innovative and affordable medicines. The OSPF has received a commitment of $3 million (about ₹20 crore) from the Tata Trusts, over three years, towards creation of the Foundation, says Menon, who teaches at Canada’s McGill University.
