Applicants asked to develop new products or services to harness the power of “big data” to improve health The National Institutes of Health has partnered with London-based Wellcome Trust to launch a global science competition for new products or services to advance “open science,” a movement to make scientific research data broadly accessible to the public. Up to six teams of technology experts and researchers stand to win $80,000 each to develop their ideas into a prototype or to advance an existing early stage prototype. The prototype judged to have the greatest potential to further open science will receive $230,000.

While the use of RDS is now common among FM broadcasters in the U.S., not every station is taking advantage of the functionality that it provides. A new RDS standard is on the horizon; RDS2 was just demonstrated at the 2015 meeting of the RDS forum. It’s a good time to examine the current RDS standard some, along with RDS2.  There are many RDS encoder models available, and just as many ways to get metadata (such as “now playing” information) up to your transmitter site. We’ll take a look at some of the products that are available. RDS AS WE HAVE COME TO KNOW IT The RDS system is the familiar way by which we have transmitted slow amounts of data over FM radio for the last 15 years or so. UC vendor 8×8 (EGHT) is announcing this morning another enterprise win, this time with cloud ERP software provider NetSuite (N), continuing its move upmarket to serve larger enterprise customers. “We’re seeing an acceleration of demand from enterprise customers,” said 8×8 Chief Marketing Officer Enzo Signore. “This is just the beginning.” Two weeks ago, 8×8 announced a win with the world’s largest provider of temporary office space, Regus plc, covered in the Daily Cloud here. Signore said that enterprise customers are moving to cloud-based unified communications (UC) because of the advantages in terms of total cost of ownership, flexibility, and additional features and functionality. NetSuite will be deploying 8×8 globally, and replacing on-premise PBX systems from three other vendors.

Statisticians today celebrate the International statistics day, but some experts in the field have raised concerns over data that lies dormant while at the same time there is high potential of using the information to transform African lives. These are some of the concerns highlighted at the Transform Africa Summit 2015, in Kigali during the second day session on “New black gold” – Harnessing Africa Data Revolution. Dr. Yussuf Murangwa, the director general of the National Institute of Statistics Rwanda (NISR) says there are three kinds of data.

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the Africa Open Data Conference in Dar es Salaam. Over 450 participants from 39 countries (including 24 African countries) attended the conference, whose sponsors included the Government of Tanzania, Code for Africa, the Open Data for Development Network, USAID, Twaweza, the World Bank and many other sponsors and partners. There is a summary of conference activity posted on Storify if you’re interested in checking it out.   The most significant takeaway for me was the combination of high-level engagement and participation of African governments alongside a community of talented and highly engaged local citizens.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), which has its national headquarters in Leeds city centre, publishes more than 260 statistical pieces of research every year to help health service bosses analyse trends. The service’s Trevelyan Square offices are being opened up to showcase some of the statistics produced and offer an insight into how numbers help to inform decisions in Leeds tonight. The events are hoped to encourage university graduates and statistical analysts in the region to consider the benefits of a career in statistics. Since the 1980s, California has led the nation in the number of people incarcerated. After decades of overcrowding a lawsuit forced the state to reduce its prison population, which led not only to the release of many low level prisoners, but a change in the decision-making process for incarceration, as well as plans to reduce recidivism. Last year, Prop 47 was passed by voters, which changed the categorization and reduced criminal penalties and sentences for many nonviolent crimes. The law made the new sentencing retroactive qualifying many for release, as well as allowed for the records of those who had already served their time to be changed accordingly. The incarceration rate has been declining steadily in the state since 2008, which has removed California from the number one spot.

TORONTO, Canada – HealthDoc.ca, a site that refers visitors to top-rated medical providers in local areas across Canada, announced today that it has published a new, comprehensive infographic on the state of health in Canada.  The infographic, which shows how many Canadians suffer from major health conditions such as asthma and diabetes, or who are exposed to risk factors such as second hand smoke, is intended to help build awareness about health care and open data amongst Canadians. “This data is out there, but few people have been able to get an overview of the state of Canadian health until we put this infographic together,” said Wilson Shek of HealthDoc.ca. “We wanted to make health data more accessible.
