Yu, Vice President, Alibaba Group, during his talk on “Future of innovation and the converging forces of change” at the GITEX Innovation week at Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai. Dubai: A new joint venture between China’s e-commerce company Alibaba and Dubai’s Meraas Holding will open a data centre in Dubai in the first half of 2016, Ethan Yu, vice-president of the Alibaba Group, told Gulf News on Sunday. Alibaba and Meraas are forming a joint-venture big data cloud computing services company called Yvolv to cover the Middle East region. The two companies signed a partnership deal earlier this year and announced it on Saturday ahead of Gitex Technology Week. “Dubai is the centre of Mena [the Middle East and North Africa], that is no doubt,” Yu said.

The following news release was issued by the American Numismatic Society: The American Numismatic Society (ANS) is pleased to announce, in collaboration with Dr. Jere Bacharach, Department of History at the University of Washington, and Dr. Sherif Anwar, College of Archaeology, Cairo University, the digital publication of the non-hoard numismatic collection of the Egyptian National Library (http://enl.numismatics.org). The catalogue consists of more than 6,500 objects, ranging from late Roman glassware and pre-Islamic Sasanian coinage to the modern Egyptian coinage of Anwar Sadat. The collection is particularly strong in Medieval Islamic coinage across all major dynasties. The catalogue differs from its predecessors in a number of ways.

‘Dubai Now’, a new hub for electronics services and the precursor of all things to come by 2021, was revealed at Gitex Technology Week, according to state news agency WAM. Dubai Now will bring together all e-government facilities under one banner. With mPay already in place, where residents can go and pay their electricity bills, traffic fines, telephone bills, RTA fees and much more, the announcement at Gitex Technology Week reveals that all of this will now come under Dubai Now. According to statistics issued by Dubai Smart Government, Dubai’s residents have taken strongly to mPay.

Ensighten has raised $53 million in debt and equity financing to push beyond its core tag management system. Existing investor Insight Venture Partners and others led the Series C round, with participation from Silicon Valley Bank. The injection will be used for product development, continuing to expand its global leadership team and to ramp up on sales resources. Ensighten had raised a total of $55 million in two rounds of prior financing. Ensighten has been on an acquisition spree of late, absorbing a small tag management system TagMan and marketing analytics startup Anametrix last year. The company’s roots are in web analytics and tag management, but it has since expanded, similar to tag management competitors like Tealium, Signal and Qubit. Ensighten’s immediate focus is mobile.

QCOSTARICA – The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) – Ministry of Public Works and Transport – will become the first public institution to have an “open data” platform, allowing anyone to access information to issues related to public transport. Sebasita Urbina, deputy minister of Transport, said that the information can also be useful to researchers and developers of “apps”, making the information easier to use. “One of our main concerns is what can we do for more people to use public transport, we know that some of the problems of infrastructure can be solved with more efficient services, but we found that people do not use public transport due to lack of information,” said Urbina.

Partners from the Open Knowledge Hub project will meet at IDS 21-23 October 2015 to share learning and explore the future role of Open Knowledge approaches in addressing development challenges. Recent years have seen a rapid rise in demand for the adoption of open knowledge approaches by the development community – something that IDS, as a long time advocate, welcomes. But through our long engagement in this area we also recognise that smaller knowledge providers and users, including many based outside Europe and North America, often lack the technical capacity and resources to engage effectively in this area. This in turn means that they might not benefit from the increased visibility and reach for their ideas that open knowledge approaches potentially offer.
